Q: Sleep/wake crash OSX Mavericks, Macbook Air 2013

Hi there,

Since the upgrade to Mavericks my 2013 Macbook Air had a few sleep wake crashes. The problem occurs when my air turns to sleep, and I try to wake it with the keyboard within a very short time.(1-3 seconds I think) Happened a few times when I was typing and accidently pressed the on/off button while typing(which is a really stupid feature in the new OSX if you ask me) and a few times when I tried to safe my laptop from going to sleep because it was idle for to long, and just got there to late. What happens is that the Macbook just gives a black screen, but is still on. I cant let it sleep by closing the lid, and the only way to get it running again is by restarting.(holding down the on/off button)

Couldnt find anything similar to this. So i'm hoping if this is a common problem with Mavericks and is on the list to be fixed with the new patch.

I hope you guys have some info.

You're right, it has absolutely nothing to do with installed apps, it can be reproduced on a completely fresh install of osx.

Nevertheless, YES, this bug does appear to be fixed in 10.9.2!

I have to say, I'm quite disappointed by Apple for not fixing this in all this time. Can it be true that I can't just fold my macbook without fearing it gets too hot at night? (Note: it get's really hot while running all night long.) If what I read is true, that Apple already has a fix ready in the next update, I can't understand why they don't release it as soon as possible.

Are you sure?  There is a similar (or same) issue affecting the MacBook Pro.  This is not fixed with 10.9.2, as I upgraded to 10.9.2 last night and had a Sleep Wake Failure this morning.

Day 3 without no sleep/wake crash.

Ok, the problem wasn't fixed on my macbook with the 10.9.2 update.

@Apple Bud, well, I've searched for a long time what could cause this problem and I thought this would be the most obvious reason because so many people have the exact same problem since Mavericks. What else could cause this?

Hey mate, are you running a MacBook Air or a MacBook Pro? Was your sleep problem non-existent on your machine prior to Mavericks?

Reason I ask is that there are different sleep failures:

The one on the MBA that everyone's talking about here seems to be widespread, relating directly to the release of OS X Mavericks, and not particulary to do with long slep durations.

However there's a different sleep failure that's not as widespread and completely unrelated to the release of Mavericks, whereby on long sleeps i.e. more than 3 hours of sleeping, some Macs are intermittently failing go into 'hibernation mode' resulting the machine becoming warm, drained battery and the requirement of a 'hard shutdown' in order to revive the machine. From the few people experiencing this problem, it would seem that the only fix is to either have the laptop replaced or have parts replaced, i.e. it's a hardware fault.

If your problem is the latter of the two, then this probably is the wrong thread to be on really.

Oh I see. Well, I'm on a 2007 MacBook Pro but the problem first occurred after I updated to Mavericks, though, so I thought this is the correct thread. Do you have a keyword for me to search for, for this specific error? Thanks!

That's quite strange then as your issue appears to be halfway between the two i.e. you have the 'long-sleep hibernation issue', yet it only started happening after updating to OS X Mavericks.

When your sleep issue next occurs, go into 'Console App' (search for the app using Spotlight in the top left of your mac screen), then do CMD + F and search for the 'sleep failure', the console message you are looking for is "Sleep Failure Code" as per my screen-capture below:

    Screenshot 2014-02-27 10.11.01.png

If you have the same sleep failure, then the thread you want to read-up on and follow is this one:

10.9.2 update has not fixed the problem on my brand new MBPR though there has been some change.

I have been closing all apps, logging out and manually selecting sleep each night (without touching any keys afterwards). The following morning, the machine is not warm, I get the black screen, requiring a forced restart.

However, I now get an additional error report during startup (that includes sleep / wake crash details) that is automatically sent to Apple.

[ I also now get a new problem after the forced restart in that the Wi-Fi icon incorrectly shows no signal - whereas I have no connectivity problem and clicking on the icon reveals a connection with maximum strength].

Half a step forward, one step back!!!!!

I have a MBP 15" 2011 and I have had the hibernation issue since I installed Mavericks. There was actually two different senarios. One was when computer had been sleeping for +3 hours and the other was when i've been away for lunch 45 mins and came back and computer was really slow like glue. Every action took like 5 mins, so closing all application could take an hour if I didn't force close the whole computer.

But now since I've thrown out my old antivirus Avira and switched it for Avast there's no more sleep issues since 3 days back.

Supreem is completely wrong.  The issue with MBP is software and confirmed by Apple as stated farther up in the thread.  Additionally, if you reinstall any previous OS the issue doesn't exist.

Apple fanboys can't admit Apple screwed this up like they have so many times previously with their products.

How is saying it's hardware being a fan boy you pleb, they've dropped a whole bunch of problems with mavericks, believe me I'm seeing all these problems as well.

Actually take the time to read the link I dropped above and check out the posts by user ncon64 on a 2012 Mbp where he had the hibernation crash issue on mountain lion and the exact same issue on mavericks.

I've for the sleep failure as per the screen shot from my console above, I will now start testing to see if this happens with 10.9.2

    Some people huh....

Oh and who has confirmed it being mavericks for the MacBook Pro? So far all I've seen is people with Macbook Airs with an entirely different sleep issue saying that 10.9.2 has fixed it.

The only way I can reproduce this problem is to let the computer sleep or force it to sleep and then quickly wake it up.  If the machine is asleep for some small number of seconds then it wakes up normally every time.  Energy Saver settings and battery vs. a/c are irrelevant.

    MBA 2013, 10.9.1.

I cannot reproduce this problem with version 10.9.2.

Hey man, I hope yours has cleared up for good, but I'd give it 2 weeks of nightly sleeps for a real test as I've sometimes seen it disappear for 10 days of nightly sleeps then come back, so it requires more than a few days of testing to be sure.

Also I don't now and have never had any antivirus software on my MBP.
