Q: Apple wireless keyboard stopped working after latest Mavericks update

MacBook Pro 15 late 2008. Did initial Mavericks upgrade and Apple wireless keyboard and magic mouse continued to work fine. Prior to Mavericks upgrade they were working fine under Mountain Lion and earlier OS X versions.

After installing the most recent Mavericks patch update on Nov 8, the Apple wireless keyboard stopped working and now it will not pair. It sees the keyboard, but when click on Pair it says "Connecting..." and tries and tries, then says "Couldn't connect to the device." Keyboard has brand new batteries.

Have reset SMC and PRAM several times with no improvement. Have deleted bluetooth plist and lockfile (when present) and rebooted with no improvement.

Magic Mouse pairs and works fine. Only having problem with the keyboard.

Has anyone found a reliable fix for this or is this a bug in the latest Mavericks update?

I have the same Problem with Bluetooth, i have a mighty mouse after installing mavericks, i have a problem with it.

I can use the mouse for some minutes and then it works not "smoove", it feels like a bad connection.

Have anybody a workaround for me?

Having the exact same problem. MacBook Pro running 10.9.1. Apple wireless keyboard worked fine yesterday, today it won't pair. Bluetooth control panel sees the keyboard and presents the Pair button, but after trying to pair I get the message "Couldn't connect to the device." Apple Magic Mouse still working fine.

I've tried clearing the PRAM, replacing batteries, restarting, and all the other tricks but nothing helps. I can see no reason why this problem would suddenly pop up. Have been using this mouse and keyboard for years, and no problems with Mavericks until today. This is incredibly frustrating.

    Anyone have any other suggestions?

Same problem here, however it is with my magic trackpad. Running 10.9.1, pairing worked flawlessly until yesterday. Now Bluetooth Preferences will present my trackpad but will not actually pair with it. Have tried replacing batteries to no effect, and I see no clues in system logs.

Same issue here. Tried everything. Tried multiple keyboards. It will no longer pair. MBP recognizes keyboards, but will not pair "Couldn't connect to the device". This is extremely frustrating and time wasting. Does anyone have a solution yet? Apple? Hello?

    Dominic55,

That worked for me. Thanks so much! The key was holding down the power button on the keyboard all the way through the pairing process. Thanks again!!

    Hi there!

Just received brand new iMac 21" yesterday. Unboxed it, turned it on and none of both bluetooth devices (keyboard and magic mouse) managed to get paired.

I was able to connect a USB mouse to log into the Mac. Did all turn off/on Bluetooth, turn off/on iMac several times with no luck. Weird thing is that when I lift keyboard on a 30 degree angle above my desk it seems to actually pair with the iMac but then when back to original position it disconnects.

I've tried the magic mouse with my 2008 Macbook and works flawlessly. After several attempts never managed to pair magic mouse with iMac and as said earlier keyboard is not working on a standard position on my desk. It is frustrating to have paid close to 2,000$ for something that does not even work out of the box... Any ideas or suggestions?

I'm planning to take it today to nearest Apple Stores but have a bad feeling about "genius" folks being able to help me out. Would be worth changing iMac for new one?

    Thanks a lot in advanced!

    Dominic55,

That worked like a charm for me. The key really was to hold the power button down the entire time until my Magic Trackpad was paired again with my Mac.

I figured out that my bluetooth keyboard was still talking to my iPad, which was in another room in the house.  The keyboard paired with my MacBook Pro after I powered down the iPad.

Had the same pb. dominic55 points to the right solution: continuous hold of keyboard power button until it pairs.

It's annoying that I have to buy a USB dongle keyboard now.

I hope there's a fix, because I thought buying an Apple Keyboard would be futureproof.

    Ha......

I am afraid the most common cause of this problem has little do with 10.9 versions. Most times the culprit is a tablet or smartphone you recently paired with. If you have an iPhone or iPad in the house, switch bluetooth off on those devices. There is little tha can go wrong with Magic mice and keyboards - unless you hit them with a hammer! It worked for me.

Actually it had nothing to do with my keyboard.

It was my Macbook Air 2012 and the APPLE GENIUS who didn't hook up the bluetooth antennas inside!

I would have noticed if they used the same screws as my old MacBook Pro, but nooooo they had to use different ones and I would need to order a new special screwdriver.

I got an independent computer tech to open it for me.

If some of your keyboards aren't working, it may be because the antennas aren't attached properly to the BLUETOOTH/WIFI CARD or you may need a new one.

    Peace.
