Open File dialogs often empty in Mavericks

Since upgrading to Mavericks I've often had problems with the Open File dialog. Often when I select a folder in any Open File dialog in any application, no files show up. This is also true when for example I try and export a photo from iPhoto. The File dialog asking me to select the location to place the photo does not show the contents of existing folders. So once I select the computers hard drive, I can't select a folder or a folder inside a folder to place the photo.

Eventually if I cancel the operation and keep trying, the Open File dialog will work.

This is but one of the many slowdowns I'm experiencing with Mavericks. In general, this has not been a pleasant upgrade, and I have a MacBook pro which is only a year old. At times it seems as slow as a computer from the 1980s.

Bow,

I completely agree and am having the same issues! At first I thought it was something with 3rd party applications (i.e. Sublime Text 3) but just now I tried to attach a picture to a message in Mail and I was unable to choose a file in the Open File dialog box. I clicked around a bit on different directories and was eventually able to open the file but this is new behaviour in Mavericks that I have never seen in Finder in the past.

I'm also experiencing other slowdowns in various parts of the OS, though I can't seem to recall any specific instances right now. Hopefully 10.9.1 will address these issues. :/

I'm the author of Default Folder X - an enhancment for Open and Save dialogs - and have been fielding reports from my users complaining of this same problem in Mavericks, asking if my software's causing it. Are you folks running Default Folder X, or are you experiencing the same problem without it? I haven't been able to reproduce this at all on my test machines, but I do see significant delays when accessing some folders for the first time since a reboot.

Thanks

No, I am not using any Finder enhancments at all (including Default Folder X). I finally noticed the spinning disk in the botom left hand side of the dialog box, indicating that Finder is searching the disk or caching directories or something. When the spinning activity indicator goes away Finder is as snappy as ever.

BTW: This may not be relegated to the Finder. I'm noticing other places in the OS that also pause for a few seconds before performing the activity they are supposed to. Mail is one of them. Also, switching back to Chrome is un-godly slow sometimes! I think its putting it to sleep or something. 😟
