How do i get rid of my virus?

All right, I'm afraid I've got virus on my new reaaallyyyyy expensive Mac Pro. I know that with OS X you should'nt be able to get virus, but I did something relly stupid... I downloaded a song I neither could get on iTunes or anywhere else from youtube, but now, every time there's a video on my screen, a "Download" sign comes up beside it. And when I click on the sign, it goes to a page fx

wsamt://cmVzb2x1dGlvbj03MjBwLVdTLUdVRVMtcGFnZVVybD1odHRwOi8vd3d3LnlvdXR1YmUuY29t L3dhdGNoP3Y9RTFxdG5MTEdqYUktV1MtR1VFUy10aXRsZT1UaGUgTmVpZ2hib3VyaG9vZCAtIFNheSBN eSBOYW1lIC8gQ3J5IE1lIEEgUml2ZXIgLSBZb3VUdWJl

and my Mac says it doesn't have the program to open the link with. I don't remember what program I used downloading the song, because I've deleted it again, but I just really wanna get rid of the "virus" or whatever it's called... Please help, is there anything I can do, that doesn't cost a fortune?

Thank you

MacBook Pro with Retina display, iOS 7.0.3, Pretty new Mac ;)

Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection

An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.

Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.

See these Apple articles:

OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware

OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware

About file quarantine in OS X

If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)

Out of curiosity, what extension was causing this behavior? Was it actually named "Youtube Video Converter" or something different? Knowing may help prevent this problem for others.

If that is the proper name, this is new adware that I've never heard of before. (See my Adware Removal Guide.) I'd love to know as much as possible, from both you and Cynander, about this thing. If you could e-mail me privately (see the Contact Me links at the bottom of every page on my site) with a link to whatever you downloaded, that would be great. I'll be able to take a look at it and add it to my guide.

It wasn't actually called that. That was it's function though. I was having an issue with KeepVid and was looking for an alternative. I wish I could recall it, but when I deleted it I didn't make note of what it was called. It was a red icon and I think it started with a W, but really not sure. I checked my search history and I did click on a site called Video Grabber. So maybe that?

See, that's the thing, I have absolutely no idea what program I used. I wanted this acoustic album really bad on my iPhone, so I thought I'd download the whole album from YouTube and then cut it into smaller pieces in iTunes - whupti, acoustic arctic monkeys for me. So I just googled something like "download youtube audio high quality" and chose the page that seemed most 'trustable'. I downloaded the program, got my acoustic album and deleted the program again. Afterwards the little download buttons popped up in the upper right corner of every single online video - or ad - on my screen. I don't think it did anything else, it was just really really annoying...

And yes, the extension was just called "YouTube Converter".

Don't know if this was any help 🙂
