Q: Which Apple-compatible monitor is recommended?

I need an external monitor to my Macbook Pro 13" (late 2013, Retina, Haswell). I expected my existing monitor to work, but it turned out that OS X was not compatible. Is the $999 Apple Cinema Display the only alternative, or can you recommend good, cheaper monitors (24")? It will mostly be used for documents, photos, and surfing. I would like to be able to use it with a PC, so it should have VGA/DVI/Thunderbolt.
