A voicemail shows in visual voicemail, but when I tap it to listen, it will not play
I see messages in my visual voicemail, but when I open them to listen, the play is greyed out.

If you ask me this Visual Voicemail is a big mess. I got a text telling me I was going to receive a trial version of this and I refused it. Too bad. I got it anyway. But when I got my new phone on Monday, I was getting only texts and no voicemails. After calling apple and being told I would have to call Verizon, I did just that. The first call asking to turn this off and let my voice mail go back to normal, resulted in No Voicemail, and no texts. As I run a business with this phone, I was extremely upset. After calling back and throwing a fit, the next tech support rep finally helped me to clear out all my old voice mail that I didn't know was still there, and he reset the system and it finally worked correctly.
I don't know who's idea this way, but they just need to let people ask for it, and not FORCE it on all of us. Especially since the translation to text is horrible.
I love my new phone, and most always Love my Verizon service. But not if they both gang up on us and force us to have something we don't want.
close out of the phone app, double tap the home button and completely close out of the app.
then do a reset, no data loss. Hold down the home/sleep button together until you see the apple logo and thne release, then wait for the phone to boot back up.
then check voicemail again.
Do I use the reset network settings option?
That is different from a reset, but you can also do reset network settings.
So you meant to hold down both sleep and home buttons, wait for apple icon to appear, then real ease and wait for reboot?
Yes, that's a reset.
That didn't work
then your next option is to contact your phone carrier, voicemail is a carrier issue.

Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings OR Reset All Settings.
This is only the case with new voicemails. Older ones can be played.
Does that new voicemail actually show a time of how long the voicmail is?
try the suggestion by our fellow veteran TJM..
No
Then maybe there nothing for you to play.
Call yourself from a different phone or landline and leave yourself a voicemail and see if you can play it.
There are 2 voicemails that are showing new, with blue dots. I've confirmed that there are messages. When you tap it, the play button is greyed out. When you tap on old messages, the play button is active, and messages can be played. This only started with OS 7
Ok, I would call your phone carrier and let them know, that you can't play your message.
something could've gone askew when you upated to IOS 7.
