Picture Files Size

I am trying to reduce the space some pictures take up on my MacBrook Pro.

Typically, I transfer pictures from my phone to my camera. My phone defaults by taking really large pictures--which I like for detail.

But I don't need all of them to be so big on my hard drive. However, when I use Preview to adjust the pictures (usually to 640 x 480), the picture file size says it is greatly reduced (from like 3 MB to around 200 kb). However, the storage space on my hard drive doesn't increase. In fact, it continues to decrease after I supposedly reduce the file size of these pictures.

After reducing the jpegs down using the Quartz filter do a save as , then keep those and move the original to an archive drive or delete them, what you are doing is making a copy of the original. only smaller but now you have 2 of that picture.

Thanks. That definitely helps. How do I find the original files? Because I had been just saving over them so the new ones have the same file name.

Is there a way I can sort on my hard drive for all of these? I've just been doing "adjust size" in Preview for 2 years so I must have a ton of duplicate photos!

I don't think so as you have been overwiting them, check your library for duplicates. That is why you woud want to do a save as (with a different name) for sorting.

You may want to post this in iPhoto, as that's where the people who know this stuff best hang out.
