I'm not sure what you're suggesting there as it doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. You can ename photos within iPhoto and the best way to back up is to back up the Library and not just the photos.
If you edit a photo in iPhoto, copy it to desktop, then back, will it have the "edits" saved?
