Can iBook sync between devices with iCloud?

Can iBook sync books & pdf files between devices using iCloud?

For example, if I upload a pdf file in my iMac's iBook library, can it sync to my iphone & ipad?

iMac (27-inch, Late 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

Sorry. This feature is broken even with the iBooks update for Mavericks. It may work for purchased content but no longer works for PDFs and collections. It did work in Mavericks and iOS7 for PDFs initially but the syncing of non-purchased is broken.

I'd wager $$ you do not sync PDFs across devices or you would not be supplying such a canned response. You have a high level and a ton of posts but that means beans to me. This is a widespread issue for iBooks. Do a search and you will see that spitting out a such a response does not acknowledge the problem.

Fact is, with an iCloud account you can sync any supported document format and PDF is a supported format. It is now broken. I hereby move you down to Level 4.

Micahel, sorry about my reply. Just don't care for canned responses. This did work and now it is broken. You are correct it is not an iCloud feature but it is a feature that did work using your Apple ID and has nothing to do with iCloud per se. Trust me, it worked like a charm when the iBooks app for Mavericks debuted. Now it doesn't even with the iBooks app update.

There are a lot of us who used iTunes to categorize our PDF collections over the past several years. That's a lot of work wiped out by the new iBooks app. The functionality is gone.

I hereby move you to Level 5.

I have no idea what you are talking about. I add PDF files (usually downloaded from online scientific journals) and non-DRM eBooks to iBooks in Mavericks, and sync them via iTunes to my iPad all the time. It works just fine. I just did it a few minutes ago to load some new iBook content on my iPad for use today.

In iTunes anything I add to iBooks shows up under Books, and I select the ones I want and sync - works just like it always has with Mavericks and iBooks for OS X (I'm running Mavericks build 13A603 and iBooks 1.0.1(281) at the moment)

While it may not work for you for some reason, please don't assume your problems are everyone's problems.

MIchael, thanks for your reply. Do you categorize your PDFs? Do you create collections on your Mac in iBooks now? Previously, all of us could categorize on the Mac and add additional metadata for sorting. These were features that existed but are now removed in Mavericks in iTunes and iBooks. You certainly can create and add to Collections but not Categories. Furthermore, newer PDFs added cannot be tagged in any way except for adding to a Collection.

Addtionally, the first iteration of iBooks was working were users would add PDFs to the iBooks app and not via iTunes. If all iDevices and Macs were using the same Apple ID, there was no additional intervention by the user. Everything was in sync...similar to using Calendars and Contacts/Address Book via iCloud. This behavior has changed. Perhaps I am missing a step, but users are no longer able to adjust settings.

Isn't the purpose of iBooks to remove it from iTunes and keep it inline with the iOS app version?

As for your last comment, you seem to be a frequent visitor here. You surely see the HUGE threads on these very iBooks issues. You're right. It doesn't affect everyone and certainly doesn't affect you, but it does affect a lot of us, which is why we're here.

We are getting way off topic here. The OP's questions have been answered, and I think discussion of issues with specific features of iBooks should be done in separate threads with their own specific question (several of which are already active).

The OP asked:

"Can iBook sync books & pdf files between devices using iCloud?"

To which the answer, as I already said, is no. iCloud was never used for this purpose, and is not now.

"For example, if I upload a pdf file in my iMac's iBook library, can it sync to my iphone & ipad?"

Again, as asked, the answer is yes, you can sync items added to your iMac's iBook Library using iTunes to all your iOS devices. If you create custom collections in iBooks in OS X, be sure you have enabled "Sync Collections" under IBooks settings on the iOS device.

So I am done with this thread for now - we have more then enough threads that have gone careening off course and continued for hundreds of posts - I'm not willing to contribute to yet another one.

It doesn't work for me also. I can (more or less) sync content downloaded from Apple, but not a pdf from my mac added to my ibook collection.

At iTunes, the books tab appeared only once, telling that the books were moved to another app, "iBook".

I also noticed other problems with the sync:

- new collections are instantly listed in all devices, but without the content added to them (just the book that started the new collection).

- not all books are syncronized. I'm just starting to make serious use of this, I have a try with 22 books in my iphone, but just 16 in my mac with several not matching, besides the pdf mentioned above (not purchased in ibook).

Regarding the books not in sync, maybe the issue could be that some of them could have been downloaded with a different appleID? If so, how can I know for a book the AppleID which is linked with?
