Does anyone know if you can change the "workspace" (dashboard if you like) colour in FCPX from black to a lighter colour that actually allows you to see the buttons and what you´re working on? Eg Transforming a clip with black borders is near impossible with black against black.

I don't think you can change the color of the interface itself. You can, in the preferences, change the background of video (black, white or checkerboard), if that is what you mean.
But anyway, the color of the interface is not exactly black - more like a dark gray, as the picture below shows. (the video background *is* set to black)
In addition to changing the video BG, zooming out can provide a easier adjustment of the bounding box while using transform.

Thank you! I do zoom in, which helps for that issue, but it's other functions too, such as audio editing etc - the buttons are so difficult too see when working on laptop screen that it's ridiculous. I've got 20/20 eyes and am quite fast, I still find it difficult. They should have chosen a much higher contrast to separate functions from the backdrop.
