How do I turn off the silence ? ( I do not want either always nor only while iPhone is locked).

How do you not silence the phone when it is locked. I settings/do not disturb, the only choices for silence: "always" or "only while iphone is locked". How do you keep the silent feature off when the phone is locked. I can not hear the ring....

iPhone 5s, iOS 7.0.3, new phone,,,, can't hear the ring

Had the same problem and thought it was more involved/elaborate.

Inadvertently, I must have moved the silence button which located on the left side of the phone by the volume controls and engaged it. If engaged, you'll notice a little red shading in its pocket. All you have to do is push the button upward towards the face and cover the red shading. Your phone will now ring while locked and resolve your concerns.

Not true. My phone does not have DND enabled and I do not have the mute switch toggled on

How do I turn off the silence ? ( I... | Official Apple Support ...

and when my phone goes into locked mode, calls go directly to voice mail, MY PHONE DOES NOT RING AT ALL . It is due to the stupid silence feature in the DND settings. You have only two choices 1. Silence ALWAYS and 2. Silence when iphone is locked. Why isn't there a silence NEVER choice?

Silence never = Do Not Disturb Off. I don't know how many times we can say that those features are only functional if DND is turned on. It sounds as if there is something wrong with your phone. I would start troubleshooting by resetting your settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. It's a bit annoying to have to redo every thing but it may solve your problem. The next step would be to restore from a back up. If that doesn't work, restore as new.

I also suggest you make an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store.

You can say it as many times as you like but if so many people are experiencing this problem when they do not have the DND feature turned on then you should acknowledge/address the glitch or the software issue that is causing this for so many. Maybe my phone does have an issue but at least a certain percentage of 1578 other people reading this discussion also have this same experience.

I acknowledge that you have a problem with the phone and gave you suggestions for resolving it. Which ones have you tried?

That is a big problem! I have my work email on the phone and there is a requirement for it to be locked automatically (no way around it). I would think the most basic function of a phone is to RING! There has to be an option for the phone to ring even if it was locked..it's so frustrating and unbelievable!

While the answer has been posted a dozen times in this thread already, you apparently didn't read it.

AN IPHONE WILL RING WHEN LOCKED. IF YOURS DOES NOT THEN IT IS BROKEN. Contact Apple Support (the link is at the top of this page) and make a genius bar appointment.

I assume that you have checked that the phone is not in Do Not Disturb. You can tell if there is a crescent moon in the top bar then DND is on. If it is, the phone will only ring when unlocked. By design.

The number of people here asking this question would indicate that you sir are the one struggling to read.

There seems to be a bug that keeps the ring muted even when Do Not Disturb is turned off.

No, there probably isn't. There are a few people who don't understand DND. There are a few people who have the mute switch engaged. And there are probably a few people who have something wrong with their phone. They need to troubleshoot.

If you think it's a bug, what are you asking apple to add a feature that you think is missing: Please, Apple: there has to be an option for the phone to ring even if it was locked."

No one is denying that some people have a problem. However, the answer isn't that Apple needs to change the switches in DND. The answer is is troubleshooting.

There is work around if you have DND OFF and button on iPhone is set to on and volume is ok..

Go to settings>General>Accessability>Assistive Touch turn button to green..

Then a transparent button will appear on the screen. It can be moved anywhere but must remain on screen. Touch it and then touch device. Then touch mute.. the bell with line through it is what you want.. counter intuitive but it will now work without have to worry about those other “silence when locked or always” settings..

Phone will ring when it is locked or unlocked.. worked for me..

I drink Austin’s Hard Cider!!

That's not a "workaround". It's correctly configuring the settings.
