partition start up disk?

I am running 10.7.5 I must run an old system as i need to use pro tools which wil not run on mavericks.


is there a way to partition my hard drive (current start up) to install Mavericks on the new partiton without erasing the current drive and starting over?

Yes. Disk Utility allows dynamic partitioning. Details in DU's help files.
