why is my drive spitting out discs

I have a macbook Pro late 2011, when i insert a disc it will accept it, make a bit of a noise, and spit it out about 20 seconds later. Im 100% sure there is no disc still in there, is my drive dead? or can the issue be resolved?

Thankyou

MacBook Pro with Retina display, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

LowLuster's response is correct, what you need to consider (if applies to you) is if you want to carry an extra "chunk" of gear with you, I travel (fly) extensively, and every piece I have to carry (and patch) is a pain. Obviously this is a decision that only you can make. For me $ 80-$100 is well worth it to me, your situation may be different.

To each his/her own:-)

All the best

The drive may dead, but it may just have a dirty reader lense. Does it do it with all discs or just this one?

You can get a CD/DVD cleaning disc almost anywhere that sells electronics, Walmart, Best Buy, Costco, online, etc... They are cheap and if it all discs try this.

If it still persists, being to a Apple store Genius (make an appointment first) and they will diagnose it for free.

The bright side is if it is dead, it not an expensive fix.

My brother has a macbook air and has an apple external drive, i really just wanted the drive to burn a cd, so i plugged it in to the usb, but my mac wont pick it up - it works fine on his. Is there some settings i need to change? or should it not work on my macbook pro? or is there another problem?

Thanks for the previous response, there are no appointments at my nearest apple store so im going to bare with my internal drive for the moment until some open up as its not urgent.

the Apple external superdrive will not work with any Mac computer that originally came with a built in DVD drive. they are made to only work on Mac's that did not come with a built in DVD drive. In any event you can buy any brand external DVD drive that connects by USB port and it will work with your Mac.

The cost to replace the internal superdrive is about $120. The cost of most any other brand external DVD drive is around $30-$50 and the cost of the Apple superdrive that won't work on your Mac is $80
