Users not disconnected from file sharing

After log out of a network user the user is still connected in file sharing. After some time users have multiple connections in file sharing when they are not logged in. It seems to have a negative impact on performance and problems with e-mail.

Anybody with the same problem?

Same problem here.

I have an ongoing ticket with Apple support and at present there is no solution.

In frustration I have constructed a clean re-installation od OS X 10.9; and Server 3.0.1 (with new file system.)

If a net user logs into the server and subsequently logs out - the server keeps the connection and as you have noticed, these can build up on subsequent login sessions via different client machines.

If a user logs in via a client A and; logs out; logs back on Client A then sometimes this seems to allow things to continue fairly normally.

If on the other hand the login sequence is via client A then client B the behaviour is as you describe.

If you run a test and do the client A & B logins for a single user you will see that mail hangs because if does not have exclusive use of the users file system. Then in this test manually disconnect the first login session; mail will un-suspend and work. The POP/SMTP password fields will be shown as correct (whereas they may have shown as being blank before.)

The log with Apple has been going on for 2 weeks now - no resolution

Just for clarity.

The problem persists after the clean installation of the OS & Server. So don't bother to go down that route.

Also; the test was run by creating new users that had home folders on a new clean filesystem.

i.e. as if this was an out of the box installation on the server side.

Sorry - I should have been clearer.

FYI, Same problem with users remaining and duplicating(Mavericks 10.9) on the AFP file sharing window after logging out. The user can log in again however it seems on a different client ok unless they crashed or switched off the client accidentally. I physically remove these duplicates after checking ARD to see which IP is the current machine they are logged into.

I have had one instance where the user has the "logged in on another computer" message appears even though ithe user name is removed from the File Sharing. If I check the simultaneous log in for this user it allows them to log in which i do as a quick "fix".

However when I logged out this morning to restart the Xserve and install Server app 3.01 I got this message even though there were no users showing at all in the Server app window for over 12 hours!User uploaded fileAfter the install of the server app v3.01 and its update of the network settings etc i can no longer edit/add/change password to the users in Accounts as all the menu items are greyed out. Thankfully Workgroup Manager 10.9 is still allowing me to add and edit my 1500+users and groups etc.although I dont know exactly when the edit functions became inoperative in server app I have refrained from using Profile Manager up to yet because of unreliability aso I still have to rely on WGM

I have been running Mavericks server about 5 weeks now and I can report that some things have improved slightly. However WGM was throwing plug in errors every time I tried to edit a users data or change a password etc. so I had nothing to lose by doing some basic housekeeping so I repaired the permissions for the server's main HD. The list of permission repairs was colossal. After this rather than restart I fully shut down the Xserve and rebooted holding the shift key to "Safe Boot" after which I rebooted as normal. This clears out various caches and such as below>

It forces a check of the startup volume, just like the First Aid feature of Disk Utility.

It loads only required kernel extensions.

It disables all fonts installed by the user.

It moves font caches to the Trash that are stored in /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/(uid)/ – where (uid) is a user ID number such as 501.

It disables all startup items and login items.

The results were great, WGM was fully operational again and the users logged in on File Sharing pane in Server app were disconnecting as they should when they logged off. Its early days yet but everything seems a lot more stable than before. The Users section in Server app still wont let me edit or add users so i still rely on WGM for this so I think this is a definite bug in Server app. I say this because I created a brand new fully working Mavericks server from scratch as an experiment and with only one network user created on the OD after a day or so the editability and being able to add new users on Server app was lost. This behaviour has been happening on Lion through to Mavericks so I dread the day when we lose WGM etc. and have to rely on Profile Manager

I can confirm the same problem and it is annoying. I have mac mini server at home with 2 clients and most of the times i have mail problems. After reboot it is gone for short time, but after close the laptop and reopen it the problem is back. So it is not only because of login and logout it is also because of sleep. Very annoying. I thought of reinstalling everything but after reading now I know I dont need to take this step. Hope Apple will do something against it.

I'm seeing the same issue on our MacMini running Mavericks 10.9.1.

The same user is connected multipe times.

I believe this is also the root cause of of your TimeMachine backup "disk image in use" issues.

Is there an option to disconnect a user after being idle for X number of minutes? I believe this was an option in earlier version of OS X Server.

AFP file sharing keeps working ok. Sometimes a user will log out and the entry remains in the Server app file sharing window but is entirely random so I just check via ARD to see if there is a user connected to the client and i disconnect it manually if showing Log in screen. If a users computer crashes or they switch it off by the power socket the log in stays but the entry has to be disconnected manually for them to log back in successfully. Each attempt to log in after the crash creates a duplicate user on the system so all entries have to be disconnected before they reconnect and log in.

Theres a great site for mac server stuff that tells you how to access the now hidden settings and you can set the disconnect idle time via the command line etc.

Warning: Allowing simultaneous log in stops this happening after a crash/unintentional power shut off but this causes problems for our students where they walk away from a logged in client(unintentionally) and log in somewhere else and the other unattended computer can be accessed and files deleted or altered. Also If one student forgets their password they "borrow" someone else's log in details and it all ends up in chaos.

Thought I'd share this: Just had this happen today where all the network was slowing down and users having slow log ins and memory maxed out. If you look the file Sharing pane shows 161 logged in via AFP whilst the server app pane shows 74. Restarting the server doesnt clear this anomaly although things speeded up. Something in the Server app is not showing the correct number of users logged in or not disconnecting properly the clients who have logged off etc.The only way to clear this is to shut down fully and reboot. I'll probably pass this on to the Apple Bug Reporter as this cannot be correct behaviour.
