Q: Connecting external hard drives
Hi,
I am trying to connect an exFAT formatted external hard drive to the TC but whilst it lights up and you can hear teh hard drive start, it wont show up in the finder. When connected directly to the Mac, it appears fine.
To check, I tried with another externa hard drive with the same formatting - same result. After reformatting to mac journal extended format and connecting it to the TC again, it did show up in the finder. From my understanding, TC should support exFAT formatted drives? Does anyone have any other ideas? Many thanks
MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

The TC USB port will only support drives that are formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)....also known as HFS+.....FAT16 and FAT 32.
From my understanding, TC should support exFAT formatted drives?
Sorry, but unfortunately, your understanding is not correct. Please review this support document on supported format types.

The first few sentences pretty much say it all......
The AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule support USB storage devices that are formatted as Mac OS Extended (HFS-plus), FAT16, or FAT32. Formatting a storage device as Mac OS Extended with journaling is recommended, as it may provide some more resilience if the device is removed or powered down while in use.
Note: ExFAT and NTFS formats aren't supported.
