Q: trouble with back to my mac on mavericks

After upgrading to Mavericks my 2010 iMac i7 quad core with 8GB of ram couldn't be accessed by back to my mac. However my Macbook Pro running mavericks, and my 2007 Macbook running lion, worked fine. I updated my airport extreme but that didn't work. I can access the Macbook Pro using my iMac and back to my mac but not the other way around. It just keeps timing out.

Any Ideas?

iMac, Mac OS 9.0.x

For those wondering if 10.9.2 fixes the BTMM problems, it does not (for me at least).

I'm in the same boat. Mac Pro, iMac at home, on ethernet, Macbook at home, on wifi. All running 10.9.2. Airport Extreme router. BTMM used to work, I think back before I installed Mav.

Macbook can connect to the iMac.

Pro can connect to the iMac.

Macbook cannot connect to the Pro.

iMac cannot connect to the Pro.

Pro cannot connect to the Macbook.

iMac cannot connect to the Macbook.

I've turned off & on BTMM in System Prefs, and have done the thing that andijames suggested, and nothing helped. The specific problem that I see is when I enter the account name and password that I want to connect to, the window just shakes its head like the name or pw is incorrect.

I first tried all this with the iMac on 10.9.1, then installed 10.9.2. No difference.

OK, I was playing around with settings, trying this & that. I found something that worked for me!

In System Prefs:Sharing, click the "Options" button and DEselect SMB, leaving AFP enabled. Did this on the Pro and the Macbook and now everything can connect to everything. I just looked at the iMac and sure enough, SMB was deselected so that's why it was connecting to the iMac.

And, FYI, whenever you turn off Sharing and turn it back on, Apple graciously ENables both AFP and SMB. So you have to go back into Options to turn off SMB whenever you turn Sharing on. At least that's my rule for now, if I can remember it.

This also worked for me!  Thanks Wingsy!

There seems to be continued problems with Apple's SMB implementation.  For clarification, you have to go to "Sharing" and then "File Sharing".  If File Sharing is off, BTMM might work fine.  But if you use File Sharing, you have to deselect SMB for BTMM to work.

I spoke too soon on this.  It now doesn't work and I am back to using router port forwarding instead of BTMM.  BTMM is seriously broken in Mavericks.  Not sure why Apple doesn't see this.

Ok.  So after much more research I figured out - thanks to another thread on here which I can't figure out how to reference - that Broadband Tuner needs to be uninstalled if you have upgraded to Mavericks.  It sets one of the variables too low to allow the utun protocol to work.  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL420  If you download this and run it to uninstall it (assuming you ran it to install it in the first place - possibly a long time ago) it may fix your issue.

    Cheers!

sshoemaker you are my hero! The broadband tuner was absolutely the problem - I wouldn't be at all surprised if that fixes some of the other issues I've had lately as well.

I had this problem on my MacBook Air.

The workaround for me is to use Safari with a vnc address

I am now able to screen share my Mac at home from my MacBook anywhere (including via personal hotspot)

Enter this address protocol into the Safari Browser:

    vnc://MyRouterIPAddressAtHome:MyMacAddressAtHome

where MyRouterIPAddressAtHome is the IP address of my router at home as seen on the web

where MyMacAddressAtHome is the IP address of my Mac at home.

When I click on the sidebar in a finder window and click on my home Mac and click Share Screen, it does not work.

But it does work using VNC with Safari.

As a side note, I am using an Airport Extreme base station at home.

If Screen Sharing is what you're trying to use BTMM for, one option is to use your computer's unique iCloud address.  To find this, in Terminal, type "dns-sd -E" and you'll see something like:

    icloud.com

    - > btmm

    - - > members

    - - - > 123456789

That number is what you want.  You can then open up Screen Sharing on the computer you are using to connect to your remote Mac, and in the "Connect To" field, type in "computername.1234565789.members.btmm.icloud.com" where "computername" is the name of the remote Mac, and "123456789" is whatever number you found from the step above.

Even when my remote Mac wasn't showing in Finder, I was able to connect using this method.  Hope this helps!

This does seem to work on Yosemite 10.10.1 but there is a chance that my issue was related to my machine being bound to 2 icloud accounts. By following the steps and only inputting 1 account it all seems to be behaving now.

    Cheers
