Q: File sharing doesn't work but screen sharing does

Since updating to Mavericks, I am able to use Back to My Mac Screen Sharing but not file sharing. If I click "Share Screen", I enter my credentials and it works. If I click "Connect As" to do file sharing, I enter the same credentials and it "shakes" telling me that it can't log in.

This goes both ways between my brand new Macbook Pro and 2012 iMac.

Both macs have Screen Sharing and File Sharing enabled. If I disable File Sharing, the "Connect As" box disappears and I can only do screen sharing. If I enable file sharing, the "Connect As" appears but I am unable to log in.

Any ideas??

I am having the exact same problem. Both machines on Mavericks and I get the shakes telling me it can't login when I try to do file sharing. File sharing turned on on both machines.

    Will keep looking.

I am having the opposite problem: file sharing works fine, but screen sharing does not. I'm still on 10.8.5 on both machines. Started yesterday afternoon.

I was having exactly the same issue - trying to file share with my iMac and MacBook Pro via Airport with my other MBP. I tried turning 'file sharing' on and off of both machines - nothing.

The solution - in my case anyways - was simple. Just go to PREFERENCES>SHARING. Make sure File Sharing is on, then click on the OPTIONS button on the mid-right. Make sure BOTH options are clicked (Share files using SMB and AFP) and it should work.

When I got there, only my AFP option was on, so when I turned on SMB also, everything was fine.

I have the same issue. Screen Sharing works (slow) but file sharing does not work.  I thought all was working since I installed Mavericks, but just noticed today that there was a problem when I tried to open a file on my MiniMac from my MacBook Pro.  I think all the settings are correct, but with no luck.  Both my SMB and AFP are turned on under the File Sharing Options. Hope there is a solution soon.

    Did you get this sorted...

File Sharing works just fine, but Screen Share will not connect, iMac to MacMini.

However, MacMini to iMac Scren Share works just fine.

    Both on Mavericks...

This is wierd; Screen Sharing has been working both ways between these Mac for years.

    Robert.

My issue has been fixed by downgrading the Remote Desktop Client back to 3.6.2.

I have oddly found a solution to this problem.  I am able to log in to my user account name for screen sharing as I stated above.  For file sharing, I had to click "connect as" and then I logged in using the actual user name (click on your HD, then "Users" and look at what the actual name is, not the "full name" that is listed in the user accounts panel.)  I used the user account password and it worked.

I hope this helps someone else.

Oddly this solution worked for me as well. Never was able to get it to accept the iCloud credientials, it just gave me the shake for wrong information.

This sounds like a stupid question, but I cannot enter anything... The "connect as..." button does nothing. It just has the name of the computer, connection failed, connect as, share screen. The share screen works fine every time, but connect as does nothing when I click it. How do I fix it?

I have the same issue. I have a new Macbook Pro (2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 running 10.9) trying to connect to an old iMac (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running 10.9).

Screen Sharing works but Connect As will not allow me to login using the exact same credentials. Makes no sense. The username I am using is the name in Users & Groups - not the name in HD/Users. Why are those different anyway. Regardless, neither one works with Connect As.

Also, what's the deal with File Sharing and Back To My Mac? I am able to Screen Share without BTMM. Is there some conflict between these things? I don't know much about  networking.

OS X Mavericks 10.9.1, released yesterday, should fix this...

It was a problem that you can work around [if you do not have time to run the update immediately] by turning Off the Firewall on your iMac.
