Late 2013 13 inch macbook pro will not boot from bootable external hard drive

My macbook will not cold boot from external usb hard drive. other macs boot fine with this drivel. All I see is greyed circle with slash thru it. Anything to do with the solid state drive?

If you have a Clone of the internal drive on an external I'm pretty sure the computer will boot from it. No new model Mac can boot from an External drive that has an Older version of OS X on it or even the same version of OS X made on an older Mac. All new Mac models have a special build of the current OS X version that contains the proper driver package for the newer hardware. No other version of OS X has that driver package for the new hardware not even the same version of OS X made from an Older Mac computer.

So you now agree that this statement of yours is incorrect. 🙂

No. It wasn't until late into the thread that anyone said anything about USB 3. Place that same clone of the 2013 MBP internal drive on on a USB 2 external drive and the system will boot from it.

Since Apple has now released two separate 10.9.1 updates, one for only 2013 models and one for all others, instead of the a Combo update it is unknown if a clone of a drive from an older Mac with 10.9.1 will boot a 2013 model if that clone is on a USB 2 or Thunderbolt external.

LowLuster Greetings: You wrote: "No new model Mac can boot from an External drive that has an Older version of OS X on it or even the same version of OS X made on an older Mac." You did not allow for any exceptions or suggest any possible qualifications.

I can verify that lowluster is correct, I have a late 2013 MacBook Pro with 10.9 on it. I cloned the drive using superduper to an external USB 2.0 western digital passport and it booted fine from it. I am going to try to make a mavericks recovery USB today and see if it will boot from it, my guess is that it won't.

That is not the issue I am referring to.

I This was a clone from my previous model, a late 2011 MBP, which I sold in order to help pay for the newest model.

Selling the late 2011 MBP was most unfortunate on your part (I understand the fiscal aspect). That unit will run all OSX's from 10.6 onwards. I will hang on to my late 2011 until it dies. No newer MBP has whetted my appetite to displace it as my No. 1.

It's an excellent machine (and was great to me!). My reasoning boiled down primarily to SSD...the traditional HDD was holding everything back. I didn't want to invest additional money in a 512GB SSD and go through the installation process. Moreover, the new models are equipped with PCIe based flash storage now. Combine the high resale value of the 2011 machine + the cost of a high quality 512GB SSD + educational discount received for the new one, I came out paying a premium of $400 dollars for the new machine. The only criticism I have of the new models is the lack of a superdrive. Besides that, it's a thing of beauty. Cheers.

That is because you are a Nit Picker. Especailly when it comes to anything I post even if it turns out to be completely true.

No worry though as I will never post any reply to you again.
