DVD's wont play on my Imac and software discs wont work either

I have an Imac that is about 2.5 years old. It wont play software discs anymore or DVDs. Sometimes it will play music CD's. They are not showing up anywhere. the drive just makes a bit of noise and then spits them out (but always over different lengths of time) what can I check? What can I do? Thanks!
