Mavericks Mail not sync'ing IMAP act. (Not GMail)

I have been waiting silently to see if a fix would come on its own, but none yet. Ever since upgrading to Mavericks, Mail.app does NOT sync my IMAP accounts correctly. I have gone so far as to remove and re-add the accounts numerous times... no change. The recent "update" that was supposed to address Gmail issues had no affect on my sync'ing issues either. As others have posted, I basically have to quit and re-launch mail for it to correctly show what is on the mail server. All of my iDevices are working just fine - I can read or move an email, and all my iDevices show it correctly... but when I return to my Mac - some show as unread - some messages that I moved or deleted are still THERE (unread), etc.

Once I quit and relaunch, the inbox displays correctly - but there is no way (that I can find) to force the inbox to "refresh" correctly while the app is open. "Getting new" messages does nothing to help. Has anyone found a solution or work-around...? or is this just a "sit back and wait for Apple to fix" kind of problem...?

Thanks,

SF

Mail is not connecting to the server after OS X Mavericks update. Meanwhile the same setting is working from Ipad, Iphone and even in windows mail. We have an exclusive mail server in our office. Connecting to mail server is easy only on the same server network with the same setting only by changing the server local address, but not working by the server IP from the internet.

Well said, Bob. I'll write something similar. I've been a user a little shorter than you, just going back to the 2SI days … but when I saw how productive it made my people, I moved the entire 50 person company (at the time) to Macs.

It's a real shame that so much of their traditional software seems to be starved for attention.

Please post any answers you might get (Ha!).

I just submitted *ANOTHER* bug report to Apple. I had (wrongly) assumed that something like this... something that breaks the core functionality that ALL Mail applications should be able to do in their most-basic form... would be squashed immediately with the next update. I/We shouldn't have to go purchase a 3rd-party application to get basic sync'ing functionality back again. Either Apple really just does not have enough users having this problem... or enough people TELLING them that they are having this problem.

If you are experiencing this Non-Sync'ing issue - PLEASE:

  • Launch the Mail.app
  • In the menu bar, go to Mail > Provide Mail Feedback... and click it
  • It's your choice to uncheck or leave-checked the option to send your Mail info
  • Click Continue
  • A new browser page will open on Apple's site with a form
  • Fill out the feedback submission form explaining this problem and submit it.

Yes, I know there are larger problems in this world. This is not life-threatening. But for a minor annoyance, it would be helpful to those of us having the issue to let Apple know. Please submit a bug report if you haven't already.

Thanks.

ive tried loads of things. interesting these things happen but i dont know why or if thats noteworthy:

i have the same versions of mail on my Mini and MBP, but Mini doesnt behave, it doesnt save things i do, changes i make, rukes i change, emails i delete or tag. i have turned off the Mini Mail and the sync between MBP and iPhone behaves.

i have no idea what thats telling me. Maybe that:

iphone mail could be the problem?

my Mini Mail is corrupt?

I bought my Macbook Pro on Jan 4th, have done all the software updates and hav a minimal amount of new apps added. Mail doesn't sync when I first log in. There is a work round I use which is a slight pain but at least it is workable:

Double-click on Inbox - that is the word Inbox which has a drop down menu containing a list of your mail account inboxes (you may have just one - I have several).

Select "Tall all accounts offline"

Wait a few seconds and you will see a warning symbol appear by each inbox

Double-click on inbox again and select "Take all accounts online"

I hope Apple fix ths soon though.

with the error in reading emails, syncing and the error in read e-mail count, i'm wondering if the reading of emails is the problem.

i noticed, when i had the read email count error, that if i scanned through emails with a preview plane, this Mavericks version didnt tick off the email as read. i had to open it or actually click into the preview plane and wait for it to be 'read'.

now i tried fixing a test email that refuses to behave. with just preview plane viewing of the email, so not a separate opened window, I apply Tags to it, close email., reopen, and those tags are not there. haven't saved.

if i do the same exercise but in a window with the email opened, so its viewed in a second window, tags save.

This would link the 2 major problems everyone is having.

still testing this out

here i have the same problem with mavericks, i'm wondering how long does it take apple to fix this silly problem ????????????????

Again, if you haven't already done so, PLEASE send a bug report to Apple via the instructions about 5 replies above this one. Apple will not fix what they don't know about - these forums are NOT a means of reporting bugs - just a way for end-users to discuss Apple topics and issues. Thanks

I filed an Apple bug on this (actually on a Gmail specific version of this - but effectively the same problem) on 20-November.

Bug number: 15516430

State:Open

Product:Mail

Rank:2 - Important

It has been marked by Apple as 'Duplicate of 15440215 (Open)', so someone else had previously filed a bug for the same problem, and that bug is still 'open'. Thats nearly 8 weeks ago. So, how long does it take Apple to fix it - more than 8 weeks certainly.

I've given up with Apple Mail now and use Airmail - which is excellent. I had one very minor problem with Airmail so filed a bug with them. I got a response the same day asking me to test a Beta version of an update to test if the bug was present in that. (In the end a 'quit' and 'restart' fixed the minor problem). Not only is the Airmail product excellent, but their customer service is outstanding - they actually communicate with you!

I reached the same point on Christmas Day.

I thought about Outlook, which I have a copy of with Office 2011, but it doesn't integrate with iCloud, so you can use your existing Contacts list with it :( No good for me as I need Contacts stay common across MacBook, iPad and iPhone.

So I bought Airmail for £1.49 (UK), $1.99 US, and it's solves all my Mavericks/Mail problems. Best Christmas present I had.

I run 3 Gmail accounts all in IMAP and all stay in sync with iPad and iPhone all the time. (Note I am using Gmail - you would need to check it out for other accounts). It integrates fine with iCloud contacts. I can't speak highly enough about Airmail. And, when I had one very minor problem I filed a bug and Airmail got back to me the same day with suggestions :). (Quit and restart fixed the minor problem). Bottom line, it just works, and is an absolute bargain.

HOW I FIXED APPLE MAIL SYNCING ISSUES WITH GMAIL (AND, I PRESUME ALL IMAPS)

In our long discussion on this, and my own tinkering, I suspected this issue had something to do with Mavericks now keeping all our internet accounts information in the cloud. If you go to settings, Internet Accounts, you can see the list of your various internet accounts. It is no longer possible to completely remove an email account in the Mail app. You can only disable it or enable it. To remove the account, you have to delete from the Internet Accounts menu in settings.

Many users in these forums have suggested deleting the Mail folder in ~/Library then restarting Mail to have it rebuild all your internet accounts. In this scenario, when you restart Apple Mail you're asked to type in the information for an email account. However, I noticed each time I did this within seconds the new Mail folder created in ~/Library upon restart of the Mail app would be populated with information from all of my email accounts and not just the single one I had entered when the Apple Mail was started.

I have suspected that this was part of the problem. Perhaps my settings and such were either messed up caused a glitch when I initially upgraded to Mavericks, and the glitch was forever saved in the iCloud Internet Accounts menu, or in all of my messing around before the so-called fix was issued I had messed something up, which, again, was set in stone in the iCloud Internet Accounts.

I know the Internet Accounts in the settings menu is now stored in iCloud because I use a MacBook Air, and two different iMacs. As soon as you sign in to iCloud on any Mac, that Internet Accounts screen is populated with all your internet accounts.

So here's what I did to get a complete fresh start and it has worked for me.

Step 1: Quit Apple Mail

Step 2: Go to Settings --> Internet Accounts. Delete the Gmail (or the offending IMAP account) account (you'll be asked to remove it across all your OS X computers--say yes). I mean DELETE, not just disable. Hit the minus sign at the bottom left of the list with Gmail highlighted.

Step 3: Then delete the iCloud account as you did the Gmail account.

Step 4: Then delete the rest of the internet accounts on the computer.

(I think this sequence is important. You are deleting the offending email account from the iCloud, which should remove it from all your computers. Then you're deleting the iCloud account, which leaves the other internet accounts you have intact on your computer and in the information intact in iCloud. Delete all other internet accounts after the iCloud deletes them only from the particular machine you're working on.)

Step 5: Go to the Library folder in your users file. (Which you can do by going to the Finder, selecting Go from the top menu, then selecting Go to Folder... typing in this: ~/Library.) Find the Mail folder and drag it to the trash. Empty the trash. If you get a message that a file is in use, restart the computer then empty trash immediately.

Step 6: Open Mail App. It will ask you to put in information for an email account. Put your GMAIL account in (or your IMAP) account FIRST!! (A MUST!) Give it some time to get everything in there. At this point, you will notice that the problem is gone. Your mail will sync properly, archived/deleted messages will move properly, and read/unread counters will function properly.

Step 7: Readd the iCloud account (which should then add your other email accounts). I did this reluctantly, but it has worked.

Repeat for all your Mavericks device.
