Q: Mavericks Mail not sync'ing IMAP act. (Not GMail)

I have been waiting silently to see if a fix would come on its own, but none yet. Ever since upgrading to Mavericks, Mail.app does NOT sync my IMAP accounts correctly. I have gone so far as to remove and re-add the accounts numerous times... no change. The recent "update" that was supposed to address Gmail issues had no affect on my sync'ing issues either. As others have posted, I basically have to quit and re-launch mail for it to correctly show what is on the mail server. All of my iDevices are working just fine - I can read or move an email, and all my iDevices show it correctly... but when I return to my Mac - some show as unread - some messages that I moved or deleted are still THERE (unread), etc.

Once I quit and relaunch, the inbox displays correctly - but there is no way (that I can find) to force the inbox to "refresh" correctly while the app is open. "Getting new" messages does nothing to help. Has anyone found a solution or work-around...? or is this just a "sit back and wait for Apple to fix" kind of problem...?

Thanks,

SF

Coming back to the original problem (Applemail not updating new messages when connected to gmail IMAP server): it comes and goes and since last Thursday it happens again that email is updated on the gmail server and on the ipad but not on the imac with Maverick and Apple mail.

In the last month I worked myself already twice through all the recommended settings to ensure they are correct, I disabled all redundant devices to minimise the number of connections, I disabled icloud because it apparently also adds to the connections, ensured there is no conflict with Avast, but the problem that appears to be fixed for a while keeps on re-occuring.

Has anyone got any more bright ideas on what to try, or can you at least confirm you are hit by the same issues?

My personal impression is that something in Maverick/icloud/new OSX increased the number or frequency of connections to the google servers and thus exceeded the limit of simultaneous connections permitted on the Oracle end (or whatever database Google is using to manage access permissions).

I have problems as well with Mavericks and gmail only on my iMac....iPhone, iPad are OK.  I frequently check mail on my iPhone and wait to use the iMac if I have to type a lengthy response.  Ever since upgrading to Mavericks, I have noticed that mail messages that were in my inbox on the phone are not in my inbox on the mac.  I have to force the gmail accounts to sync and the missing messages will appear.  Note that it is not ALL messages from my gmail accounts but only some.  AOL seems to work fine.  Seriously a pain.  Any suggestions?

I too have been following this conversation for several weeks now, trying each new suggestion as it has been offered. Somehow, I think Mail is syncing "better" than it had been, but I don't think it's completely fixed. The most obvious evidence of this is that the items in my inbox, which are supposed to be numbered 1–24, for example, are all numbered 24.

Rather than wait to see if Mail syncs properly, I have gotten myself into the habit of quitting Mail whenever I leave my desk. When I return, I open it again, and it seems to retrieve all my messages.

It's frustrating, and I have gone through the process of informing Apple. I did try AirMail, which some people in this conversation suggested, but I could not get used to the interface, so I returned to Mail.

I haven't found any solution that's permanent.  Tried the permissions fix and thought that worked but ultimately it didn't.  The only thing I can do to try make sure my messages appear in the Inbox is to invoke the Synchonize command for the mail account.  Please Apple, fix Mail which wasn't broken before the Mavericks release.

To add insult to injury: I went today to a prime Apple store for a purchase and mentioned the problem on the sideline: they maintained this is the first time they hear about the problem, and the problem can't be there's, I should contact Google.

Apple just posted this technical bulletin on the Mail problem:

Great.  Another workaround instead of Apple solving the problem.

Yes, but I see it as a POSITIVE - it's a public acknowledgement that they know of the problem and are probably finishing-up a fix for an upcoming release. There's no way Apple would just leave it at "providing a workaround" and not a full-blown fix. This is very encouraging.

And on a tngental note: We will all be SO releived when it is fixed - only to have forgotten about it 2 days later.

I tried the workaround and it fixes at least the problem of not getting any new mail. What it does not re-instate is the synchronisation: mail that did arrive on the iMac inbox but was later deleted via the iPad on the IMAP server stays in the inbox of the iMac even when "get new mail" is pressed (hence it is close to the behaviour that the POP server shows, not a real IMAP connection).

I gather the people at Apple HQ don't need to keep up with  email flow in real time !

The Mail issue and work around is a pain in the butt -  especially if you have to do it every 3 Minutes !

Thats 20 times an hour or 160 times a day. No way to run a business really!

I paid for the software to work but it doesn't.

Fix it please or give me my money back (imac,airbook,2 x Macbook pro's)

    cetainly a little vague...

what about the number count on read/unread items?

Reading an email and it still being listed, or coming back from read to, unread

    Syncing between OSX devices?

Now after 1 week or more, and after repairing disk permissions - Gmail is still working fine with Apple Mail.  I know others have not had the same experience.

I did go back and verify disk permissions 3-4 days after I initially did it and found errors again, but Gmail was still working okay.  So I repaired them again and everything has been fine since.

Just wanted to let others know.

heres another good example, unless im mising something..

my flagged items, the standard flagged folder lists items witha flag, in Trash andSent items. This currently lists 31 when i have no flags. i open the saved search, as thats essentially what it is, and untick 'search trash', and all the flags listed go, so the number listed is 0, even though before this there were no items in Trash. Confused.

i'm further confused that when i close Mail and open it, that flagged search hasreset itself to search Trash.

Nothing i do saves itself. It always reverts...

My opinion is that Mail has at least two major bugs.

    1) IMAP - while Mail communicates to an IMAP server it's behavior is that of a non-IMAP connection. This leaves me to conclude that the IMAP negotiation with an IMAP server is broke.

    2) Database - Mail uses SQLite3 and it appears that the way that Mail interfaces with SQLite3 is broke because it loses track of email items with regard to where the email item is located in Mail; inbox, trash, a folder... Because of this, updating the IMAP server is problematic.

So do we have a fix of any kind? Does Friars works? Does the repair disk work? Apple's "work around" did nothing for me. Can we get a summary of the fixes and rather they worked? There are so many listed but back and forth over their efficiency. Thanks
