Q: Mavericks Mail not sync'ing IMAP act. (Not GMail)

I have been waiting silently to see if a fix would come on its own, but none yet. Ever since upgrading to Mavericks, Mail.app does NOT sync my IMAP accounts correctly. I have gone so far as to remove and re-add the accounts numerous times... no change. The recent "update" that was supposed to address Gmail issues had no affect on my sync'ing issues either. As others have posted, I basically have to quit and re-launch mail for it to correctly show what is on the mail server. All of my iDevices are working just fine - I can read or move an email, and all my iDevices show it correctly... but when I return to my Mac - some show as unread - some messages that I moved or deleted are still THERE (unread), etc.

Once I quit and relaunch, the inbox displays correctly - but there is no way (that I can find) to force the inbox to "refresh" correctly while the app is open. "Getting new" messages does nothing to help. Has anyone found a solution or work-around...? or is this just a "sit back and wait for Apple to fix" kind of problem...?

Thanks,

SF

Has anyone, in clear language, figured out the root of this problem?

The problem being why Mail on Mac OSX 10.10 (Yosemite) does not play well with 1AND1 mail services? My entire company runs on this and it keep taking a dump on us.

Also, is there, in clear language, a solution?

Opinion: I can't imagine why in this day and age setting up a basic email account can be so bug ridden and difficult.

I am a long time Apple user, from the first macintosh onwards! One takes email for granted, only recently did I notice that sometimes I did not get emails people say they have sent. The big problem with such bugs is that I was not even aware that I was missing some emails (which Apple Mail did not download) - a few would come in, making me think mail was fine. Dropping some emails is unacceptable for an email program.

Following the recommendations of some earlier posters, I have installed Airmail today (now ver 2, which sells for $12 compared to $2 for previous version!). Hopefully that will solve all mail problems.

I will update here if the imap sync problem persists with Airmail. If I don't post here it means Airmail has solved my problem.

    Not happy, Apple !!

I am coming back to update == I have Yosemite on my machines now.  I just went into my two accounts on GoDaddy to check == everything is coming in as it should.  I have not noticed any problem for awhile, really.  Before I was seeing emails on my iPhone that wouldn't' make it to my macs = but now it looks like everything is syncing fine.

I did though set up a QuickKeys auto Sync to happen at 6am daily = I suppose you could set it up with Automator [but I already own QuicKeys and it's easy for me to use] - I figured it couldn't hurt = I suppose without checking Logs I don't know exactly what is going on, but it's been a week or three and I have not noticed problems like those I was having before.

QuicKeys has been around for years and years == it is a program which creates shortcuts and abbreviations of all types, in all apps.  You can set it to run with a keystroke or at a certain time, or with a certain condition etc.  I have one to open items after a restart with a pause, so they are not log in items in the SysPrefs but after a bit.  Think of Text Expander on steroids.  you can set up all sorts of automatic actions.  Website is http://www.startly.com

I don't know what I was thinking. I used QuickKeys at least 25 years ago. The only thing I would do with QuickKeys in this situation is to program it to take my Apple Mail (imap) account offline, take it back online and check for new emails. To me, it is ridiculous that we have to do that to make an iMap email account on Yosemite work. They clearly broke it when they required us to change our accounts from POP to iMap. A fix for the problem is the only thing that is going to satisfy me.

It's not only Yosemite. IMAP on 10.9.5 is broken too :-(

It couldn't have been 25 years, but not too far from that for sure....and no the problem should be fixed at Apple and in Mail and not with work arounds.  But since I set up the QK syncing all every morning, I think it seems to have calmed down....I could also do a QK for going off line and back on, but so far no need.  But, this is just a stopgap.

    Hi,

I have the same problem. Using several Macs (2 iMacs, 2 MacBooks, MacMini) accessing the same IMAP-Account. All settings, applications and OS-versions are the same, but two Macs don't sync proper. I tried everything, the only thing that worked for me was to rebuilt the account. The account has about 25000 Mails in it, so this workaround takes about 30 minutes to update the index. This is unfeasible because we get our orders via mail...

I am looking for a reliable mail-software, can anybody help me?!

    Thanks Daniel

this solutions works for my gmail accounts:

Hello everyone, i got the final solution for this tedious problem with Apple Mail.

With certain accounts only, you have to set a different IMAP and SMTP address: imap.googlemail.com (port 993) and smtp.googlemail.com (port 465)

If you can't change it by the preferences you can manually edit the Accounts.plist file in the directory /Library/Mail/V2/MailData, change and replace imap.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com with imap.googlemail.com and smtp.googlemail.com.

    Hope it can help!

So, having gone through the 27 pages of responses, a year later, I'm on El Capitan on a MacBook Pro and a MacBook and have the same issues as many in this thread. I don't have problems synching statuses or unread counts, but that the connection to the IMAP server keeps going down. This used to be present only on the month old MacBook but recently appeared on the MBP as well. No problems at all with iPhone or iPads.

I can consistently get them to connect by turning off WiFi and turning it back again. Connection Doctor, however, does nothing except tell me that the connections timed out. Changing SSL or port settings does nothing. I have four accounts on two different ISPs (no gmail) and it's the same with all.

    Any news from anyone?

    HHello Ola,

you you have my sympathies... This one drove me mad on Mavericks and it look a long long time to fix.

i Test drove a beta release of Mavericks and confirmed the problem was finally fixed. However, this took so long that I gave up with Apple Mail and went to Airmail, or Airmail 2 as it is now.

AIrmail works perfect with IMAP accounts, keeping my MacBook, iMac, iPhone and iPad mail perfectly in sync. I also like the way Airmail handles multiple accounts (I have 4 email accounts); it displays them much bettrr than Apple Mail. So that was my solution.

however, from time to time I check the operation of Appke Mail, particularly when I upgrade, as I did to Yosemite, and recently to El Capitan, to check that it still syncs ok. And on both Yosemite and EC it does, although not as quickly as Airmail does. And the layout reminds me that I like Airmail much better too.

    hope this helps.

    tony

Thanks. I did change to Outlook for a while, but other issues (primarily how it manages attachments) drove me back to Mail.

It's so incredibly frustrating - it would occur every few hours on my MacBook only (which sits in the living room and I only use for lazy monitoring of e-mails outside normal business hours) but now it occurs ever few minutes on my primary MacBook Pro.
