thanks. are you saying that i can't upgrade my desktop, a 400 mhz powerpc g4, beyond leopard 10.5.8.

Worse than that. A PowerPC with a min 867mHz processor is required for 10.5.X. You are maxed at 10.4.11.

Ther are some workabouts and helper applciations that are supposed to trick the 10.5 installer into "seeing" a slower processor as 867 so 10.5 can install but, based on how much slower my G4 1.25 ghz Powermac runs with 10.5 compared to 10.4, i think using a hack for 10.5 on a 400 mHz Mac would be futile.

If you need a 10.4 compatible browser that is still current and maintained, try this:

I'm going to get you moved to the forum dedicated to PowerMac towers--more fellow users there. This one covers older iMacs.

also, the tenfourfox site said ...

G4 owners, you need to determine if your G4 is a 7450-series CPU ("G4e"), such as the 744x or 745x series, or a 7400-series CPU, such as the 7400 and 7410. Typically the "G4e" series of CPU are in most G4s at and over 733MHz.

The wrong version will work on your machine, but will not run as well. The easiest way to find out which version you should use is to open Terminal.app and type machine. Your output will probably look like this:

[old-sawtooth]$ machine
ppc7400
[new-ibook]$ machine
ppc7450

but it didn't tell me how i 'open terminal.app' i have no idea how to do that.

98.5 times out of a 100 ... That's a bad keyboard. Borrow a keyboard and see if it will work with your machine.

it's using os x version 10.4.11.

Why do you want to upgrade? You have an old machine. You best spend the money on a newer machine. The official lower limit for 10.5 is 867mhz. There are ways of fudging this, but 400mhz is now where near 867mhz. You would experience a death defying slugish machine in my view.

Just spend the minimum to get your work done until you can get a newer machine.

A 400mhz g4 isn't going to get much done today. You best run older apps. New apps require newer hardware.

If you want to surf todays web, get TenFourFox as prevously mentioned. It's a web browser ... It will not upgrade to a new mac os. It will not fix your keyboard. Why would you think it would do these things?

Nothing in this world will allow you to install Snow Leopard or higher on a 400 mHz G4

By default, Terminal is located in Applications > Utilities. Double-click it like any other application. It will ask for your admin password when you type "machine".

To save you the work, the everymac.com database shows the G4/400 is using the 7400 version:
