I am trying to use the new version of Pages in layout mode – like in previous versions – but it seems to be missing. Am I just not looking in the right place, or has that functionality been removed from the application?

You can open the blank template & then, click Setup then Document & uncheck Document Body which will remove the underlaying text layer. Although, personally, I'd recommend continuing to use Pages 4.3.

Thank you, Peggy – this solves part of my problem, but still no vertical rulers. I guess I need to read more before upgrading next time :-)

Would it be correct to assume that Pages 3.0 with the Document Body turned off would be limited to 1-page documents?

You can go back to Pages '09 which is still on your Mac if you haven't deleted it:

I have no idea, Jerry. It's something we will have to try. I've rarely used page layout in any version of Pages since it was introduced with Pages '08.

It is essentially the old Layout mode in Pages '09 except you can't move pages, just delete them and there is no text linking.
Basically all they have done is made it simpler to switch between the two modes, except from WP (Document text) to Layout (non-Document text) destroys everything that was in the Document text.
