Q: Lost Auto- Completion List in Table Columns

Hi All.

I've just updated to Maverick and because of this I had to upgrade my Numbers 09 to the latest version Numbers 3.0.

My problem is that a couple of spread sheets that I use have lost their autofill routine i.e., when I input an address with the door number of  lets say, [ 15 ] Redbourne Street it would automatically suggest previous address's starting with 15 and if I wanted that address in that box quick click done. Same with a time value if I input 13-00pm  it would auto suggest all the times from 13-00pm to 13-59pm that I'd previously had input in that column. And so forth for a persons name.

The question is can anyone direct me on the way to setting my spread sheets to do this again?

Regards

Walter

    Walter,

They left that out of the new version, claiming they had more important things to do for the first edition of Version 3, but if you can wait 6 months, they plan to bring it back. Obviously, it wouldn't be a good idea to hold your breath for that long.

Thank you for the link to the almighty after the event department at Apple.

They launch a product, suck us in or force us to have to upgrade.

We then find out they've left a load of glicks for us struggle with and send out a

release sheet with a list of problems that should have been resolved and implemented

with the product launch. If this was any other company heads would roll.

Once again I thank my community friends with their guidance and help.

    Regards

    Hi Walter,

The x.0 version of any piece of software contains several errors. This one is worse than most, but caution is always warranted when it comes to jumping into the n.0 pool, no matter whose back yard that pool is in.

It's exciting to be on the bleeding edge, but it can be painful as well. I'm sitting thes 'upgrade' out for a while.

    Barry.

My full intention was to sit out as you say, because of previous, updating, upgrade problems.

In this latest update one should have  learned that if some one offers something free, one should not bite the apple , but wait and read anything first that may come up on the community tom tom drum. Once again we learn by our mistakes "I think".

You should actually see your old Numbers version still living on your Mac. It has not been replaced, and you can even have them both running simultaneously.  But take care not to open your "old" documents with the new version if there are features you need to keep. Bottom line: You can use your old Numbers version for anything that does not go in your iCloud folder, whereas you need to use the new version to sync with iOS. Now you will at least be certain not to have any compatibiliy issues with the latter.

Hmm its always a case of two steps forward one step back...not as bad as the 'release first' 'code' later new apps.

Auto complete / auto fill...was a boon..however you will need to use the Pop Up menu in the Data Format settings.

    Select the column

In cell format select Pop Up Menu

    Add suggestions in there...

however it appears once you initiate the Pop Up function you cannot enter a new  name you are required to select a suggestion from the pop up..

so heres the two forward one back ..for the time being.

Looks like Auto complete has finally been added to Maverick numbers. Once again they don't listen and make a fool of themselves by adding it quietly on an upgrade.

'Once again they don't listen' ..you are so right. Its a pity they dont adopt a 'we are in this together' attitude, lets work it out.

In the whole scheme of things a little omission like this is no big deal...however. I do recall a rant fron a pro FCP user some time ago..summed up Apples 'new' business ethic.

Apple make subtle, stealth changes as the days go by. We can only sit and hope. If only they would tell us..''yep we are working on that' That is something I find truly outrageous. Arrogant silence.

    I wonder who that was?

"Looks like Auto complete has finally been added to Maverick numbers. Once again they don't listen and make a fool of themselves by adding it quietly on an upgrade."

What is it you're complining about here, Walter?

That the feature was not in the initial release of Numbers 3?

Legitimate complaint, but you've made that one already.

That they did add it (as they said they would)?

    Isn't that what you requested?

That they said it would be put in 'in the next six months,' then did put it in within three months?

That they put it in during an 'upgrade'?

When would you suggest they put it in?

(btw, Unless the 'upgraded' version is Numbers 4.x, it's an 'update', not an 'upgrade.')

Or is it just that they did it 'quietly'?

Not trying to start an argument here; as I said earlier, I'm sitting the upgrade out for a while to let the dust settle—I'm not too happy with what's happened with Numbers either, but I don't see adding auto-complete as a negative action.

    Regards,

    Barry

@Keef: Regarding "yep we are working on that"

Unusual as it may be, Apple actually did say somethng to that effect back on November 11.
