iPhoto 9.5 sharpening drastically affects red channel

I have the weirdest bug: opening a photo into the "edit" window recalculates the edits and ties the "sharpening slider" to the photo's "red channel." There are no visible slider changes, but a beautifully edited photo is suddenly converted to peaked reds. This renders the sharpening slider and the editing panel more than useless – they damage the photo. I don't even have to enter the adjustement pane for the change to occur. Command + E is sufficient to recalculate, bringing my work to a standstill.

Everything since the last update has been working properly, at least until the latest "Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 5.01." I use a Sony NEX but only save JPEG and never RAW. The Sony Alpha NEX-5T is included in the update, but I'm shooting with a Sony NEX-5, which is an earlier generation model.

I've also confirmed the "sharpening/red channel" bug is present in Aperture v3.5 – RAW 5.01 – Build 718.1, and RAW Support 5010 – Build 91.8.

Is there a way to revert to the previous RAW build? Is there a patch? Am I just forced to wait on Apple?

First try the following:

1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your

User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.

2 - delete iPhoto's cache file delete the contents the following folder:

User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/

Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto

User uploaded file

3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.

NOTE: For Mavericks, 10.9, go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:

User uploaded file

where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.

Next, log into another user account and test iPhoto there to see if the problem persists. Report back with the results.

If it does persist then a reinstall of the iPhoto application is indicated.

Note: if you have 2 copies of the same provile that shouldn't be a problem.

Disk is suddenly no longer corrupt. (Rebooted into recovery mode twice, it said the whole disk would need a fresh install, so I bucked up a few things and went to check in recovery mode again but this time it said the disk was fine.)

I reinstalled iPhoto. It opens, flashes my event panels, then crashes. It successfully opens an empty library for new users.

Aperture opens successfully, but no longer opens the library. "Import Library" shows the iPhoto library gray'd out, but "Commands" > "Import" will allow it.

Aperture can create a new library, but crashes when trying to import my previous iPhoto version backup or converted current iPhoto version backup.

iPhoto can function after updating an older copy/pervious version and repairing permissions, but it breaks (permanently) when it tries to repair the library.

iPhoto is unable to import my previous version backup or converted current version backup.

A workaround until you find a solution could be the following:

Starting over from scratch with new library

Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:

1. Open the library package like this.

User uploaded file

2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.

3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.

User uploaded file

This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.

Note: your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

Seems to be fine. Just a problem with rebuilding the library, which it is unable to do.

Is there a way to transfer all the ilder internal files to the newer updated library, force the update, and keep enough data for a successful rebuild? That's the hack I need.

I also need a way to remove the RAW compatibility update from my computer. That's what broke it in the firstplace.

No. If one can't rebuiild the library with iPhoto or iPhoto LIbrary Manager then it the work around I suggested.

If you can get iPhoto to work as it's supposed to in another user account the problem lies in your account and could be a preference file(s) other than iPhoto's. Here's how to determine of that's the case:

Trouble Shooting Preferences

NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

If you're running Mavericks, 10.9, go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:

User uploaded file

1 - close all applications.

2 - open your Home/Library folder and Option-drag (copy) the Preferences folder to the Desktop.

3 - select the contents of your Home/Library/Preferences folder and drag them into the Trash bin in the Dock. You will be asked to provide your Admin password.

4 - reboot. Be sure to know your account's username and password as you will be asked to log in with it.

5 - run the application again and determine if the problem(s) is fixed.

6 - If the problem is fixed:

A - open the working Home/Library/Preferences folder.

B - Open the Preferences folder on the Desktop, select all of the contents and drag them into the working Home/Library/Preferences folder.

C - When the Copy window pops up check the "Apply to All" check box and then click on the Don't Replace or Skip button.

D - reboot.

7 - If the problem is NOT fixed, drag the contents of the Preference folder on the Desktop into the Home/Library/Preference folder and replace the entire contents that were created by clicking on Replace.

8 - reboot and you're back as square one.

Note: keep the Preference folder on the desktop until you're sure all registration info for your apps are working. If not you can copy the required files from the desktop pref folder to the working one.

Emptying the prefs folder didn't help, although interestingly, it did show my most recent library as an unreadable folder rather than a library.

I spent 4 hours on the phone with a specialist. She couldn't do anything, but she did inform me it is well known among support that iPhoto begins to display random bugs with libraries over 50 GB, so she keeps multiple libraries. Also of interest, my library has a lot of alias references which my specialist didn't have, weird, unless they're from Aperture.

Currently, neither iPhoto nor Aperture can open the library. I went back to my iPhoto 9.4 pre-Mavericks library, repaired it with 9.4, cropped it down to 30 GB, and updated it in alternating trials with both iPhoto 9.5 and Aperture 3.5. In all cases, it's still unreadable. The one exception is one trial with a smaller library which can actually open, but crashes when one tries to edit photos. I also tried hacking the DataModelVersion.plist to no avail.
