iMac late 2009 set up dual monitor

I have a iMac late 2009 and I am trying to set up a dual monitor using a Dell. Can anyone provide help. When I plug the VGA adapter to my iMac mini display, the Dell monitor goes into sleep. HELP!!!!

Exactly what connectors (inlude where you got them and who made them) are you using and exactly what are the setting you established in System Preferences - Displays.
