Hello Carolyn,

  • To uninstall apps you purchased from the Mac App Store, hold down an app’s icon in Launchpad until all the icons begin to jiggle. Click an app’s delete button (x) to uninstall the app.If an icon doesn’t have a delete button, that app can’t be uninstalled. For example, apps that come with OS X can’t be uninstalled.
  • To uninstall other apps, drag the app to the Trash (the Trash is located at the end of the Dock), and then choose Finder > Empty Trash. If you change your mind, before emptying the Trash, select the app in the Trash, and then choose File > Put Back.Warning: When you empty the Trash, the app is permanently removed from your computer. If you have any files that you created with the app, you may not be able to open them.

To remove an app from the Dock, make sure you have quit the app, click and hold the apps icon and drag it 2 or 3 inches off the Dock and it'll turn into a cloud. Let go and it should be gone. However, the app should still be present in your Applications folder. How you remove the actual app depends on how it was installed.

If it was simply dragged and dropped into the Applications folder (e.g. such as Skype/Chrome/Firefox) simply drag it from the Applications folder to the Trash and empty the Trash.

If the app was installed using and installer, where you clicked and run the installer app you will need to uninstall it using the uninstaller app that is hopefully available from the developer. Sometimes there is an uninstaller bundled with the installer package.
