iTunes 11.1.2 not registering new ID3 v2.4 tags (Deleting music from both library and HDD)

I'm a DJ and therefore have ALOT of editing in my iTunes music library (adding and deleting tracks, commenting, adding tracks to new- and smart playlists etc.).

Music management on the hdd -wise, I frequently use the ID3 tags for deleting tracks from both the music library and my hdd, but since updating iTunes to 11.1.2 i'm having difficulties.

I have this routine for deleting tracks:

  1. Rating tracks due to delete with 0 stars
  2. Going to smart playlist called 'To trash' (filter = 0 stars), select all tracks
  3. Adding/changing genre to 'to trash'
  4. Searching for 'Move to trash' in my HDD music folder
  5. Move all mp3 files to trash, empty trash
  6. iTunes, run Doug Script 'Super Remove Dead Tracks'

After the routine, all tracks I decided to delete, where deleted from both the library and hdd folder.

BUT, now it seems that Finder doesn't find any mp3 files with the ID3 metatag of 'to trash' (Step 4), hence i cannot "smart find" the tracks i want to delete.

Possible cause of the problem: i'm suspecting it to be iTunes not "tagging" properly;

All of my "DJ-tags", such as 'MTV' and 'Mainstream' etc, in comments, tagged before updating to 11.1.2, can be found by these metatags, but it seems like new tags/comments are not "registered" in the ID3 metatags - at least not recognized by Finder.

Note: I know that i can just downgrade to an earlier version of iTunes, but I'm very interested in having my equipment up to date, since I'm using it professionally, and want it to be as stable as possible with my hardware.

Any suggestions?

WHy do so much unneccesary work?

Why not simply...

  1. Rating tracks due to delete with 0 stars
  2. Going to smart playlist called 'To trash' (filter = 0 stars), select all tracks
  3. Command Delete (which deletes all the selected songs from your library & HD).

The next question it will ask is if you want to delete from your HD.

Anyways, the topic is (mostly) about iTunes not tagging properly (apparently).

Yes, there are two issues.

ID3 tags.

Your workflow, which is way too much. Use the computer to do the work, not you. No need to pull your engine just to change the oil.

Just checked and the ID3 tags works fine here.

Do this.

System prefs > Spotlight.

Select the Privacy tab and add the drive with your media.

Then remove the drive with your media.

This will force the OS to rebuild the Spotlight index files, which where the metadata for files is stored for searching.

This app you can view the Spotlight metadata of files/folders.

Note: I know that i can just downgrade to an earlier version of iTunes, but I'm very interested in having my equipment up to date,

FYI: iTunes 11.1.3 was released Tuesday , 5 November.

It doesn't ask me if i want to delete from hdd, but just deletes the track from the playlist and library.

After updating iTunes to 11.1.3 and reindexing Spotlight, it still can't find the files by the newly added metadata.

SpotlightMetadata can find the "old" metatags/term (eg. 'Mainstream' - as Finder/Spotlight), but not new/added ('to trash'). I'm searching with the attribute 'kMDItemComment' and for 'to trash'.

I cannot seem to make the 'Query a File' -function work. Neither with the folder path or the complete file path. Nothing happens when i press 'Get MetaData'

Go to iTunes prefs > Advanced.

Is the iTunes media folder location set to the folder with your media?

I'm searching with the attribute 'kMDItemComment' and for 'to trash'.

You changed the Genre in step 3, not the comments.

Search for kMDItemMusicalGenre = "to Trash"

Click Choose... to select a file/folder.

Get Metadata seems kinda redunant as when you choose a file/folder, it gets the metadata.

1. Changing the iTunes media folder works!

from /Volumes/Library HDD/Users/Username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media (which isn't my music folder) to /Volumes/Library HDD/Users/Username/Music/My Music (which IS my main music folder) makes 'Option + Delete' work! - also asking me to delete the file from hdd

2. Regarding SpotlightMetadata, I changed/added both the comment and genre to 'to trash' - I forgot to mention. Either way SpotlightMetadata still doesn't find any tracks/files with the appropriate metatag.

3. The 'Choose' option still doesn't find anything 😐

So, my current issue has been solved (deleting tracks), but that doesn't regard the issue with iTunes not saving/registering the ID3 tags properly, which is still a big mystery, and is also quite a problem for my, due to i'm using the 'function'/option for other purposes than just deleting files.

Looks like the Spotlight Metadata is not getting updated.

Do this.

  1. Using SpotlightMetada app, open a specific song.
  2. Query a File, then Choose... and select a song. Is there any metadata?
  3. Now open System prefs > Spotlight.
  4. Click the Privacy tab and add the folder the song is located in.
  5. Wait a minute then remove this folder from the Privacy tab.

Now go back to step 1 and see if the metdata appears/is correct.

Change the genre to this song in iTunes then do 1-5 again

You can reset the Spotlight index for a volume & it may take a long time.

This seems to work better to reindex Spotlight for the volume.

Open the Terminal app in Applications > Utilities and cut and paste this and press return...

sudo mdutil -E "/Volumes/Library HDD/"

Then you can quit Terminal.

Look at the SpotLight search box at top right of yoru menu bar and you will see how long it will take to reindex the drive.
