Very sluggish performance since installing Mavericks

As with many other people, my MacBook is running really sluggishly, ever since I installed Mavericks. It is running much slower than it was with OSX Lion that I had before. This is a 2010 Macbook with 4 GB RAM. I talked to someone this morning with an even older MacBook that is just flying along with Mavericks. Something must be wrong with mine.

An example of sluggishness is that after clicking on a menu item, it may take several seconds for the drop-down menu to appear.

Another problem I'm having, which I believe is a known problem that is presumably being addressed, is that my Apple Bluetooth mouse is unable to perform scrolling by dragging my finger along it, in some apps, some of the time. Sometimes apps recover the ability to do scrolling.

I tried disabling App Nap on all apps I keep running most of the time and it made no difference. I've looked at Activity Monitor but there doesn't seem to be any unusual load on the system. I looked at Console and there are a lot of messages of many kinds, but at the moment no new activity. However, at times there was rapid generation of an "Invalid display" message, with jillions of them present in the console list. I suspect these may relate to the fact that I use a second monitor off and on during the day. Right now the second monitor is plugged in, and no such messages are occurring, but the log shows a lot of them earlier. They look like this:

11/14/13 11:58:56.366 AM BBEdit[202]: CGSCopyDisplayUUID: Invalid display 0x2b3c49d5

11/14/13 11:58:56.399 AM BBEdit[202]: CGSCopyDisplayUUID: Invalid display 0x2b3c49d5

11/14/13 11:58:56.615 AM BBEdit[202]: CGSCopyDisplayUUID: Invalid display 0x2b3c49d5

11/14/13 11:58:56.832 AM BBEdit[202]: CGSCopyDisplayUUID: Invalid display 0x2b3c49d5

11/14/13 11:58:57.116 AM BBEdit[202]: CGSCopyDisplayUUID: Invalid display 0x2b3c49d5

These are all from BBEdit, but earlier there were lots from Excel and Word too.

I ran etrecheck (downloaded from http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck) and got the following. There are a lot of failed items in there, and for some of them I think I need to uninstall or disable certain things, but for others I'm not really sure what I'm looking at.

After OS 10.9 running fast 'n smooth for nearly a month I too experienced extreme sluggish performance. Startup was especially long, nearly 5 minutes. Once at the desktop, it took several more minutes for the dock to appear. Menu would respond 30 seconds later. I restarted a couple times and the same old. I couldb't even get to Recoverly mode. I used Time Machine to take my system back a couple days but to no avail.

So I restarted with a external drive clone of my old system and repaired everthing that could be repaired with Disk Utility (permissions), zapped PRAM and, hoy ****, everything went back to normal when I restarted OS 10.9. In fairness, I've had this happen under OS 10.5 and 10.6, so I knew the drill. 2013 2.6GHz i7 Mini with Fusion drive.

Every time performance really slows a lot, if I look at the console, there will be thousands of messages appearing from one or more apps, dozens or more per second. Almost always they are "Invalid display" messages, but not always. If I note the apps that are generating them and shut down and restart these apps, the system always starts running much better.

Dec 3, 2013 7:29 AM in response to tedtoal2

A week later and my Macbook is back to EXTREMELY sluggish performance. I don't understand why Activity Monitor never shows a heavy CPU load in these cases.

Is memory the problem? It shouldn't be. I'm maxed out at 4 gigs, and I have 14 apps open. That's a big load on memory, but OSX Lion coped much better than what I'm experiencing with Mavericks. Mavericks is supposed to do better with memory demands, with its memory compression and app nap. Of those 14 apps, I'm switching between Mail, Word, Console, Activity Monitor, Safari, and Finder. All other apps should be napping, I haven't visited them in a long time (overnight). But performance is currently abysmal. Console shows nothing much happening. It earlier showed the usual millions of Word invalid display messages, so I shut down and restarted Word and that stopped them. Still slow.

Of course, I may have turned app nap off on some of my apps, a recommendation that crops up on the slow-Mavericks forums. Probably should undo that, since it didn't help.

Memory pressure showed a constant level of about 50% for the first few weeks after installing Mavericks, but recently it has risen to about 75% (of the full plot window height). It doesn't vary much.

I just closed my cover for a few minutes, then reopened and relogged in. It took so long, it is SO sluggish. The console log shows a lot of messages that I don't understand. Certainly some of them seem to be indicating serious problems. Here is the tail end of the log from the time I closed the case:

Here are a couple of steps that may help.

Step 1

Boot in safe mode. This will cause certain caches maintained by the system to be rebuilt.

Safe mode is much slower to boot than normal. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.

When the login screen appears, shut down. There's no need to log in while in safe mode.

Step 2

Reset the System Management Controller.

After completing these steps, start up as usual and see whether there's an improvement.

I also get the "Invalid display" messages. I use two external displays while at work (one plugged into each of the two mini displayports in my Retina Macbook Pro, and after unplugging them I find that I get "Invalid display" messages coming in pairs ("Invalid display 0x3c0c07c2" and "Invalid display 0x3c0c07c1"). I assume there is one for each of the displays.

It appears that _every_ app that was running when the external displays were connected trigger these messages. They can reliably be triggered by clicking on one such app to give it focus when it did not have focus before, or by copying/pasting from the clipboard (in which case two pairs are trigered each time).

For example, here is some output from /var/log/system.log annotated by what I did at the time:

Also, I'm not sure what triggers it, but some applications will freak out and report the "Invalid display" message a bunch of times at once. For example, earlier this afternoon I see entries from Dock in which it printed 8 pairs of "Invalid display" messages in the same second (there are a few instances of this pattern later in the afternoon):

Dec 5 13:44:48 mib104303i Dock[592]: CGSCopyDisplayUUID: Invalid display 0x3c0c07c2

Also, some apps seem to be completely freaking out about this situation.

For example, f.lux (which is updated to version 23.0) was spewing approximately 500 invalid display messages _per_minute_ once the displays were disconnected (until it was quit and restarted, after which it is fine).

These are actually a bit more interesting, as in addition to the "CGSCopyDisplayUUID" variant, there is also even more instances of "CGSGetSizeOfDisplayTransfer".

For example:

Having similar "slow/sluggish" problems with my iMac since loading 10.9--

Followed your suggestion to go to Start up items thru the FInder--to eliminate the apps you listed--

but "Start up Items" is empty --

I too am getting the "Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired." message when I run Verify Permissions in Disk Utility--

But since I've gotten that message many time before, I always just ignore it--

Any other suggestions of how to re-energize my iMac?

TIA

Hey guys, I have the same problem. My problem is that the ENTIRE SYSTEM is slow. What's most dissapointing is that SEARCH in finder is extremely slow. It used to search as I typed and results would be available in a millisecond, now it takes a long time. I used to be so proud of this feature and bragged about it to Windows users. Now I have the same slow system as Windows... Any ideas how to speed that back up?

Hello BgladNYC, I willingly confess _maybe_ to being a cynic, today. Apple, et al. have _always_ advanced their computers so-that users need to Buy New to keep up to-date.

My case would-be to Buy new RAM, to keep my iMac running smoothly. (Who would have guessed that my 4 GB of RAM is not enough?)

Welcome to the world of computing, BgladNYC. Enjoy it, while you can!

I guess your problem with your MacBook is twofold, tedtoal2:

- In my experience, 4 GB of RAM on a machine with a regular hard drive is not enough for Mavericks. I suspect the OS is already optimized for SSDs, it uses a lot of hard drive memory (Look at your Virtual Memory Statistics: 21.33 GB Page-ins!). So I would suggest to put more RAM into your MacBook, and you can! According to MacTracker, you can put in two 8 GB 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM modules for a total of 16 GB. The maximum of 4 GB was true when you bought the machine. If you have more RAM, less memory mangling is neccessary, and this will speed up the system.

- Beside from that, try to update or remove system extensions you don't really need. Look for similar problems like yours here on this forum for hints.

I had no idea that I could upgrade to 16GB, thanks so much for that info! Amazing that Apple could say that the slots were limited to 4GB but actually they are not. I immediately ordered new memory. We'll see how that does. I'm guessing it will be a great improvement.

Still, I also think there are some problems with Microsoft Office, and I wish they'd issue an update or a new version, but I've heard nothing about it.

Also, I suspect BBEdit has some problems. I found that closing it caused WindowServer to drop from 90% to 10% of CPU. I had previously not realized that I had thousands of open files in BBEdit, and once I discovered that and closed them, I saw a good performance improvement. But the other day at 90% WindowServer CPU, there were few files open in BBEdit and yet closing it allowed WindowServer to reduce to 10%. Why isn't WindowServer's CPU time shown under the app that it is servicing?

Ok, guess what? I really COULD and DID update to 16 GB of RAM!!!! Not sure yet how it will affect performance, that remains to be seen. Just booted with the new RAM. It took two tries. The first RAM I bought sounded right, except for one thing: it was 1333MHz instead of 1066MHz. I figured that meant it could tolerate a faster clock speed, and surely my slower clock speed would not be a problem. But it failed, with beeps when I tried to boot. I tried again, this time ordering Mushkin 997019 DDR3 SODIMM (2x8GB) 16GB PC3-8500 SODIMM 204p 7-7-7-20 1.5v RAM from RAMEXPERTS for $165 and it worked. Sweet, real sweet. Thank you so much for letting me know this was possible!

Also, in the meantime, I upgraded my 500 GB HD to a Seagate 1TB SSHD, about which I posted separately my process of getting it working. So, I have two separate changes that should speed up the system. I will post in a month or so after I've had a chance to see how it works. If I don't get BETTER performance than pre-Mavericks, I will attempt to downgrade back to Lion.

Very sluggish performance since installing Mavericks
