Aug 31, 2014 1:06 AM in response to jams1361by ExpatVFX,Hi!
I have same/similar issue. Internal camera of my relative new Macbook pro is suddenly not working anymore in OSX. None of my camera-using apps shows a picture. However the camera works perfectly fine in Windows 8.1 on my Boot Camp partition. So, no hardware issue! It's clearly something Apple messed up with low quality "bugfixes" of drivers in their last system update. I'm running the newest and not so greatest OSX 10.9.4.
I tried everything to fix this by now, still no luck :
-SMC reset
-PRAM reset
-new user account
-new keychain
-uninstalled several apps like AirDisplay
-repaired the permissions via Disk Utility
-made sure Parallels doesn't use the camera
-and many more which I already forgot....
Apple has to offer a simple diagnostic and repair tool for that kind of stuff. A safe boot with selective drivers would also be a solution. At least show us more than your Apple logo during the boot, so we can see what is being loaded and when!
Windows 8.1 is ugly but it works. The same can be said about Linux. Pretty complicated but completely fixable if necessary. Unfortunately I can't say that about OSX at this stage.

Sep 5, 2014 10:13 AM in response to jams1361by Dakota Geek,I was able to successfully regain access to my camera using the instructions at http://osxdaily.com/2013/12/27/fix-there-is-no-connected-camera-error-mac/
It basically came down to running a command in the Terminal to kill a process (VDCAssistant) that was "stuck".

1. Run the command in Terminal.
2. Relaunch the application and use the cam.

Oct 3, 2014 11:24 PM in response to fenzikby wildeng,Hi, same problem here on a brand new MacBookPro Retina. After the update 10.9.5 my webcam just disappeared. I tried everything, even the
sudo killall VDCAssistant
but nothing...
If anyone has something different to try out, let me now.

Contact your retailer for help with your brand new Mac. He can either: (1) determine whether your new Mac needs repair or replacement, or (2) show you how to make your camera work correctly.

Oct 14, 2014 11:56 AM in response to jams1361by wulfenite,Anyone who has had AirParrot installed before Mavericks will need to completely remove all of its drivers.
AirParrot instructions: http://help.airsquirrels.com/support/articles/1000106969-i-need-to-remove
There should be similar removal procedures for other wireless extension programs.

Oct 27, 2014 12:14 PM in response to jams1361by johnmoon,I had the same problem with Mavericks: the camera would not work. I had to kill VDCAssistant to be able to use the camera. I re-installed the OS but nothing changed. Yesterday I installed Yosemite AND as I expected the problem persists.

Nov 24, 2014 5:54 AM in response to johnmoonby clonquehopper,In Mavericks, at least, there is an easier way round the fix for non-techies if you do not wish to use Terminal. Open Activity Monitor, go to Disk (all processes) and scroll down through the open processes until you find the VDC Assistant process. Double click on it and choose Quit, then Force Quit from the next menu. Your camera should now work again.

Mar 23, 2015 12:33 PM in response to jams1361by mr_director,I'm having the same problem with a twist. I don't have anything called "VDCAssistant" running. However, I do have VTDecoderXPCService running, which is the closest. Force quitting that did nothing, however. Still saying "There is no connected camera." Is there anyone with any other ideas that may help?
I'm on 10.9.5 and am hesitant to upgrade as others have done so without any fix.
