Nearly every time I try to use the template styling in the "Format" pane, the app will crash with the message saying "Pages quite unexpectedly".
By 'Template Styling' I mean Paragraph Styling, Character Styling, Bullets & Lists etc...
I only just bought this Mac so I have never had Pages '09 on it.
Please advise.

What Template are you using?
Is it possible you are in a document that you opened up from Word?

I am just starting with a brand new "Blank Document".
In the past, I have used Word docs on this version of Pages and the same problems occured.
Possibly a font issue.
Are you using an imported foreign (Cyrillic) font that you have not validated in Font Book?

How would I check this?
Here are my fonts as they appear under Format > Font > Show Fonts:
Font Book is in your Applications folder.
Open it and check any non-Apple fonts you are using by:
selecting the font/s > Menu > File > Validate Fonts

All fonts passed. As it is a new Macbook, I wouldn't expect there to be any non-Apple fonts - I just did a Restore and it said that all of my fonts were already standard. 😕
Still you should not be having the problem, so you need to look.
You haven't answered my original question are you using any foreign fonts?
It may be having a problem with finding them or an equivalent to substitute in the document?

As I said they all passed the validation.
I am using Helvetica Regular. I am not aware of using any foriegn fonts. There are some foriegn fonts in the standard Apple fontbook though.
I'm having this exact same issue. I suspect in my case it's an issue having to do with importing a Word document. Just to be on the safe side I ran through the validation of all of my installed fonts. They all checked out ok. As with @kuroshb I'm using the latest version of Pages on a brand new Mac.
It doesn't matter what style I select, the application quits. An example would include a body style of Arial Narrow Regular 15pt black. That's defined as a style. When I select that style the application quits.
How do I determine if the document is using another font other than what's already in Font Book?
I think I have found the cause - I was using an old monitor which maybe couldn't handle the pixel density? Not using this monitor seems to have fixed it for the time being - I will post back after a few weeks to fully test it.
I'm also using an external display. It's an Apple Cinema Display. Did you need to disconnect the monitor, or just move Pages to the primary display?
I am experiencing the same problem, and this "solved" the problem (thank you!). When I have a document on an external (low DPI) monitor, trying to apply a style crashes Pages; if I drag the Pages window to the MacBook Pro's built-in display then I can apply styles without the app crashing. This is definitely a bug related to Retina/not-Retina displays.
I just tried this - you should be able to just move Pages to the primary (Retina) display.
Nate, thanks for the report. I'd set aside my work for a while given the annoyance of the bug and just got back to it today. This appears to fix the issue.
This bug does seem to be monitor related.
Particularly frustrating having just traded a 17" Macbook Pro for a 13" retina to use with two large thunderbold displays. Not fit for purpose at the moment if I have to work on the home screen.
Any tricks gratefully received.
