iPhoto freezes when editing and it also freezes the computer?

I am running OS 10.9 and iPhoto is updated to it's newest version. While editing photo, particularly cropping, iPhoto will freeze and it will also freeze the computer and I have to turn the power off and restart. This is a consistent problem with the new version of iPhoto.

I tried the above with about twenty-five photos and iPhoto froze and also the computer again. I have written iPhoto because I believe this is a bug in the new version of iPhoto. Do you have anyother suggestions? This is very frustrating and it seems there is often critical bugs when new versions come out along with a new operating system. Sorry for my late reply.

It might be a bug but it's a pretty esoteric one that's only affecting you. If you beleive it's a bug then contact Apple

iPhoto Menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback

and report it. They're the only ones who can fix such things.

On the off chance that it's a local issue I'd swtich to another User Account and repeat the test.

You're mightly determined that Apple should fix this problem you're having, but they won't. One, because iPhoto works in the other account, it shows that iPhoto is functioning normally and two: you're the only person reporting it. All of that tells us that you have a local issue on your machine, in one user account. Most likely some out of date software or plugin is interfering with the normal running of iPhoto there.

iPhoto 11 v9.5 is good for about 1,000,000 images. How many do you have?

Try the two fixes below in order as needed:

Fix #1

1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.

2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.

Fix #2

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library

1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.

2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..

3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.

4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.

5 - Click on the Create button.

Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the probl

em or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

I updated iPhoto and continue to run into the freezing problem. I'm not sure what made me think this but I had several external hard disks connected and thought that maybe I should disconnect them. I did that and went back to my editing and for a couple of sessions it was working just find. Then I was doing another editing session and it froze. After a few naughty words, I dicovered that I had connected one of the other hard drives. I disconnected the hard drive and then rebooted. I have not run into the problem since. I should also say that my iPhoto Libraries are on an external hard drive and not on the computer. If I only have that HD connected and no others it works fine. Now that I have said that the next time I do some cropping it'll freeze up on me.

Well, I haven't used iPhoto since my last post where I thought I had solved my problem regarding multiple hard drives running that was causing the problem. I was wrong. My first outing with iPhoto yesterday froze very quickly on me. I don't think this is our problem to fix it is Apples and they better get to it. I remember awhile back, couple of years maybe, Apple had a new update and I started have issues with iPhoto. Someone told me it's not Apples problem to fix it was mine. A couple of weeks later Apple came out with an iPhoto fix. I lost hundreds of photos with that one but fortunately a friend told me to always save my individual photos outside of iPhoto so I really didn't lose them. I guess I will have to try out Adobe Lightroom which I'm told is far superiior to iPhoto but has a high initial learning curve. Too bad.
