When you upgrade an iOS you need to connect the iPhone to its charger and to an electrical outlet, then start the upgrade. This is done so you do not lose power during the upgrade from a battery running out of charge.
You need to connect your iPhone to a Computer.
Either a PC or Mac.
Itunes should already be installed on the computer/Mac.
Use iTunes to upgrade your IOS on your iPhone.
Plugging the unit into the wall will simply charge your phone.
You'll be waiting till IOS 11 comes out to upgrade that way.
Joel406, that is not true...there are two ways to upgrade an iOS: connect to a computer running iTunes or over-the-air. You can download and upgrade via WiFi or even via a cellular data link...but it is important to be attached to a power source so the battery does not die during the installation portion of the upgrade.
I have upgraded using all of those approaches.
You need to connect to an AC power source, that is, a wall outlet using the charger and connecting cord.
