Spotlight has been flakey for me ever since Mountain Lion... Sometimes re-indexing will help.

To re-index your whole startup disk, open System Preferences, select Spotlight, select the Privacy tab, click the plus ( + ) button, add your startup disk (Macintosh HD, or whatever name it goes by), then remove it by clicking the minus ( - ) button. Afterwards, spotlight should perform a fresh indexing of the disk.

Indexing helped

I have run verify permission and that found errors so I repaired the errors and that has now fixed the problem.

Thank you
