i am looking to download and install mavericks osx and i was wondering if i did not do a back up of my computer before i install mavericks would i lose any apps or data off my computer? also would anything else happen?

It's possible. That's why you should always backup your important files before upgrading.

i have a hard drive but is not big enough to do a back up of all my data so that is why i was wondering if it would delete it back to factory settings or if it would keep it all on there i know there is a possibility of it deleting data 🙂
Restoring to factory settings deletes all personal data.
yeah but does mavericks restore your computer back to factory settings or not?
It is not supposed to, but this is the real world and things don't always go as they are supposed to.
Buy a large enough external drive, use Time Machine to backup your computer and only then install Mavericks.
