Battery Draining and Laptop Heat on Maverick

2 months old mid 2013 MBA 128GB Flash, 4GB RAM, i5. Before maverick update, the laptop lasts for 13 hours as advertised and only drains ~3% of battery overnight.

After the maverick update, the battery drains from 100% to 2% overnight in sleep mode with all programs closed and I can feel the heat near the air vent constantly.

Adding on, with low power CPU usage, my laptop gets incredibly hot, especially at the top right corner of the computer.

This is the info from etrecheck in Safe mode.

Report from Rember

Test Results

All tests passed!

Total built-in memory: 4 GB

This is the total amount of physical memory that the computer has installed. If this figure is not showing the correct amount of memory there may be a problem with one or more installed DIMMS.

Available memory: 202 MB

Available memory is the amount of physical memory that is currently not in use by any other processes. All available memory will be used for testing when the "All" option is selected. To increase the amount of available memory, you can restart your computer before testing. If you are familiar with the command line (CLI), you can run memtest (the core of Rember) in single-user mode. See Rember help, or http://www.memtestosx.org for more information.

Requested amount: All MB

The total amount of memory requested for testing by the Rember application. Not all requested memory can be allocated for testing. See information on "Available memory" for more information.

Memory allocated for testing: 197 MB

This is the total amount of memory that memtest was able to allocate for testing. See "Available memory" section for more information.

-------

Loops selected: 1

Total loops selected by user for testing. All loops should complete when testing is successful. Test failure when the "Continue on Error" preference is selected will cancel tests before this number of loops has been completed. Users can also cancel testing before this number is reached.

Loops completed: 1

Total loops completed by memtest. Note that the Rember is not always able to identify how many loops ran. If there are discrepancies between this and the loops selected, the log should be examined to determine exactly how many loops were performed.

-------

Total execution time: 62 seconds

This is the total amount of time that it took to execute the selected tests. Execution time may vary from system to system, and is provided as a guide for determining how long users can expect tests to run based on the amount of memory installed on the system.

Testing start time: 2013-11-15 14:03:23 +0000

Testing end time: 2013-11-15 14:04:25 +0000

Hope you can get something from this, Lex. Thank you for your help!

jhhng: are you sure that the above list is made IN the SAFE MODE?, I do not think so.

I still see everything that you would have removed earlier. And these things will not be there in the safe mode.

Your problem is different from stevie and so you do first what we discussed in the old thread then come again in this one with a new Etrecheck posted.

The proposal of dominic is worthwhile, it does no harm and is not bad at all.

But we see a rather deep going cleaning necessary here.

I did SMC and PRAM reset as well as reinstalling maverick but those steps didn't help. I am more concerned about the heat coming out from my laptop because it gets really hot when in use and equally so when I put my laptop to sleep. This problem started last week and I worry the heat will damage some parts in my macbook.

Ya I am certain. I held Shift key while restarting and I could see the "Safe boot" in red on the menubar. Keyboard backlit, dropbox, and some other programs were disabled in that mode while I was running the check.

This is the etre check log in normal boot. You could see that there's a difference in RAM usage.

Jhhng:

The Rember thing was not necessary (my post was addressed to Stevie) all your Ram is accounted for.

In your case we have conflicting software.

Regarding your Etrecheck list:

1. In SystemPreferences/Users&Groups/LoginItems: remove (with the minus sign underneath) all entries but Dropbox.

2. Uninstall following softwares (completely, if possible with the uninstaller that came with it):

- ajaxserver,

- citric (unless you have an unbearable urge to use VPN 😝)

- unity player (use VLC later on)

- In SystemPreferences: Flip4Mac (VLC later on)

- eyebeam (do not throw away the original installer, you may want to re-install)

3. From the two InternetPlugin folders (one in User/Library/, one in /Library/ ) remove the Citric plugins, juniper plugin, unity plugin.

Now run an Etrecheck list again. We'll see.

Ram usage does not seem to be an issue.

Nov 15, 2013 9:15 AM in response to McRoger

Mister McRoger, I saw you in different threads, but it is not solved as I see.

A beautiful and powerful MBA, congrats.

You have enough Ram, and enough free space for a lot of fun.

I am in a reception having a champagne right now---

Here is my commentary:

1. - you have to get rid of Sophos (not crap but superfluous) and LittleSnitch (crap), they interfere with Mavericks.

uninstall completely.

- Uninstall also TimeMachineScheduler. Read what our late TimeMachine professor said about these schedulers: http://pondini.org/OSX/Home.html ....If it is still there...

2. If you do not need Virtualbox, uninstall it; if you need it, let it not run continiously: take the entry out of /Library/StartupItems/ and start it manually when needed and Quit it when ready.

3. The com.apple.CSConfigDotMacCert-guy.delathouwer@me.com is still there, remove it.

4. If you can do without Plex, uninstall it completely. Same for BOINC.

5. You probably can do without Totalspaces.. and CrossoverCD...

6. Take Nikon message Center out of the SystemPreferences/Users&Groups/LoginItems items for now. Check for the latest Nikon apps updates.

7. If you do not need Java, uninstall it (I never needed it).
