iPad mini retina speakers/volume

I just picked up my retina mini a few days ago and have noticed that the speakers/volume act a little glitchy. For example, I'll be listening to music on Spotify or watching a YouTube video, and all of a sudden (and without any prompting by me), the volume will randomly drop down by about 10-15% on its own. More telling is the "sound effects" volume (e.g., the keyboard clicks): increasing the sound effects volume to max will DECREASE the volume of the keyboard clicks. But then decreasing the volume to about mid range will actually INCREASE the volume (decreasing the volume further from mid range will then decrease the volume until mute, as it's supposed to). So basically, the mid range of the volume scale outputs the loudest volume and the min and max ranges will output the softest volume. This can't be normal, right?

Just wondering if anyone else who got a new retina mini is experiencing any weird speaker/sound issues. As it was just released, I wouldn't be surprised if I got a buggy unit. Or maybe I'm just hearing things.

And I'll note that having never used a mini (only an iPad and iPad 2), the max volume is surprisingly soft. Comparing the same ring tone on my iPhone 5 and the mini on max volume, the iPhone sounds louder (though the mini does produce a tiny amount of "rumble" for better low end sound, I guess). Again, though, maybe mine's just defective.

Kubert, it worked for me. I was trying to watch a video on Tuts+ and realized there was a problem because I had the volume up all of the way but I couldn't hear it. Now I can hear the video just fine. In fact, I had to turn the volume down because it was too loud and my hearing is kind of meh to begin with due to a constant ringing so that seems to affect more than just the ringer.

I had found the solution but not sure whether applicable to all of you.

iPad mini 2 have stereo speaker and this was the reason make the sound soft and low in volume.

To solve this, go to setting>general>accessibility >hearing! Tap the Mono audio to enable mono.

Go and try the speaker with any video or music, the iPad sound has back!

Hope this can help u all.

None of these suggestions works for my iPad mini retina. My sound still low and almost without bass sounds.

Just some days ago I had a dinner with friends at my home and the room was very noise, cause we were ten people chatting, I wanted to show them a video I made with iMovie but, also at higher volume, no one could hear it well. So I moved the video on the iPad mini non retina of my wife and everyone could hear loud and clear. Bad thing is that I tried also with the other tablet of my son (Nexus 7) and with this one I had to set the volume at 80% cause the maximum volume of the Asus tablet was too loud.

I can survive with this, cause I'm not so interested in volume, and I often use earpods, but this inacceptable for an Apple device.

You guys can forget about returning the retina mini for another one cuz they're all gonna have the same weak *** volume. I've listened to maybe 5 different ones in different stores and they are all the same I've done some comparing between the old mini the retina mini and the ipad air. And iPhone 5 and the 4

Im really into speaker volume loudness cuz I don't use headphones all the time Sometimes I'll put the iPhone on shuffle while I'm working around the house. In the shower. Walking dog. Showin youtube videos to friends. Watching Whatever. Sometimes Headphones get in the way And other times they're not safe to wear

My kids have the 1st gen ipad mini. I temporarily owned a retina Mini 16 gig tmobile and I bought an air for the wife. and compared same songs I also did this at best buy The sound on the mini non retina is plenty loud. Got Some bass too. Easily fills up a room. Same song out of the retina mini is low volume and no bass. Almost sounds like a speaker that the woofer blew out in and the tweeter is only thing working... The song outta the air is louder than the retina mini but not quite as loud as 1st gen mini. But the air is loud enough to get the job done. Air has better clarity than the 1st gen mini too but lacks the punch of the 1st gen mini.

iPhone 5 is louder than the retina mini too

iPhone 4 isn't quite as loud as the iPhone 5 but not too bad

Keep in mind if u are gonna use headphones exclusively then the volume of the 1st gen mini and the retina mini is the exact same. I've read that was the case and I also tested it for myself.

The low retina volume is also a problem watching hbo go and Netflix too. Cuz some movies have low volume to begin with and the louder volume of the 1st gen mini makes then audible. Not so with the retina mini. If it's a dead quiet room then it's ok but any background noise and forget it

So this is a real problem for me. My choice is the low res but kickass volume of the 1st gen mini or the sharper text and terrible volume of the retina mini. I like everything about the new mini 2 but the volume really ruins it for me. And may be a deal breaker. I'm leaning toward the 1st gen mini 32 gig

So i got my third ipad mini retina replacement yesterday. Did some testing against iphone5 using the iOS ringtones and youtube videos. iPhone5 is still louder on both tests; but in some ringtones they are somewhat equal (or that I cannot hear a big difference).

This is it for me, I will not be replacing again because it is what it is. Disappointed? YES! but their customer service is good and willingness to replace for me. With that said, "IF" Apple choose to recall in the future I will then be returning these, but I do not foresee that coming; UNLESS there is a class lawsuit.

Same problem with a Mini Retina 16GB with iOS 7.0.4 in Hong Kong.

Sound quality is outstanding, but volume is too low, even at max level and with Sound Check off. Seems a world-wide issue.

Additionally, it seems not so responsive and blazing fast as boasted in reviews and articles I read online.

I returned it and asked for a refund. Oddly, the assistants at the Apple Store were not surprised of seeing "yet another mini" returning to the shop. I haven't been the first, apparently.

I start thinking there must be something more than a simple software issue. Nexus 5 had a similar problem that has been corrected in two ways, through a firmware update and through the enlargement of the speakers' holes on the bottom of the device with a new production batch.

I like the mini retina, but I see no point at spending that much money just to have an "almost good" device.

If only Apple acknowledged the issue publicly, at least we would know whether to keep our devices waiting for a fix or waiting to buy the new batch. But perhaps this is exactly what they want to avoid, which reinforces my idea that there is more than just a software glitch.

Hi Junior6

For me it's not just a matter of volume level. Comparing to tho original mini, there's a noticeable lack of bass and the sound is very agressive and with only trebles. The difference is gorgiious, thét's why I still keep my original mini, after 2 refunds. I'm agree with you, it's not just a software issue and I realy think that only a new production batch with more physical space accorded to the speaker...

But how can we know what Apple intends to do...
