Q: my iphone screen went black but phone is still on and its charging. HELP

Nothing you can do without a functioning lock and home botton, necesary to reset the phone. Get it repaired. B

Everybody is talking about the solution only. But what is the reason behind this problem?

IF the problem is fixed, why does that matter to you?  Without your phone to debug, there is no way to know exact the reason.

I am just concerned about the cause as i can make myself sure next time, not to do that thing again which caused this problem.

PS: its not just about the solution to the problem, its also about the reason behind that problem.

My phone was in a similar condition, I looked on this thread and tried everything, from a hard reset to letting it sit and charge, etc. I had dropped it the day before, and finally took it to the genius bar to be evaluated. Turns out the light in my screen was broken from the fall, and I only had to pay for a new screen before it was back to normal! So before you get a whole new phone, maybe consider this option.
