Touch ID sometimes works and sometimes doesn't

My phone will allow me to set up my thumb print touch id and then will work for a couple of days and then stops recognizing it altogether. With my index finger, sometimes the touch id works and at other times will not.

I visited my local Verizon store today and was told that Apple was aware of this issue and will be issuing a software fix for it. He told me that they have found out that people have different types of skin and that Apple did not take that into account when developing this.

Has anyone else heard of this story?
