airport express blinks amber instead of green

Everytime I unplug my lap top and take it with me, my airport express blinks amber instead of green. I can never seem to connect it easily again, it stays blinking amber or solid amber. How do I I make sure it is on and green when I get home and put my lap top back.

AirPort Express 802.11n (1st Gen), Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Just to be sure I understand. You take your laptop with you but leave the AirPort Express ... correct? When disconnecting the laptop from the Express the Express' status LED switches from solid green to either blinking amber or solid amber ... correct?

Is the Express the only router in your current network configuration? That is, is it connected directly by Ethernet to an Internet modem or to another router upstream of it? If either what is the make & model of this device?
