Wouldn't it be nice if the Netflix phone reps were allowed to recognize their company's responsibility for this situation before they send people around rebooting modems and routers, etc., for no good reason?
That's why you always have to tell these phone reps to send a report to their tech and development departments. All these poor first responders have is a basic troubleshooting list. They are underpaid, overworked and usually know less about networks and streaming than you and I.
When I had an AT&T service technician at my house the other day, I asked him - how much training does AT&T give you guys to prepare you for your job? He was very honest. He said - 2 weekends and they're off on their first service job. No further knowledge required. - I rest my case...

Zoddie, how do you run your AppleTV through a VPN service? Isn't that only possible through a computer?
It is off topic but you can set the DNS server in the Apple TV. It works well with the various VPN services that allow you to change your geographic location. This is actually one benefit of the Apple TV - where you set it in the Apple TV not your router so other devices continue to connect normally. With the Roku you had to change the DNS settings in the router so all devices were using the VPN service.

Well it may be costing me speed on my iPad 2, but I have intentionally not upgraded my Netflix iPad app past version 2.4. .

Understood - the reason I was highlighting it was you should still seen 3000 kkps with the old Netflix app on your iPad2.
If you are only seeing 1750 kbps you may have something else going on with your Network limiting Netflix playback on multiple devices - not just the Apple TV.

Dec 3, 2013 5:22 PM in response to DustyStormby Philly30,This is horrible , Netflix on apple is just garbage now. Works fine on ipad, HBO GO and hulu play HD no problem

Dec 3, 2013 5:47 PM in response to DustyStormby inramana,Same garbage here. Netflix consumption on my big screen has gone down to nearly nil.
Netflix/ Apple should really step up and sort this out.

Call them, e-mail them, talk to their service reps. Posting a brief rant on this thread will change nothing.

Dec 3, 2013 7:14 PM in response to DustyStormby Therius,Recently, I've had this same issue on my ATV 3 and 2. I ran the Netflix "Example Short 23.976" on both and got the same "shotty" standard def. results. However, when I run the Netflix app on my iPad 2, I get HD quality as I should. When I Airplay it to my TV, it stays HD. So for now, I will have to airplay my favorite shows to see them in HD and ditch the ATV Netflix app until this is fixed, or I breakdown and buy a Roku or Chromecast. *sheesh*
I contacted Netflix, but they just wanted to run me through the "try restarting you ATV", "Try restarting your router" crap. I did all that many times, up front, before I discovered it wasn't on my end. I have Time Warner Cable internet, 30mbps down, 5mbps up per Speedtest.net. Everthing else (Youtube, etc.) working normally. Thought I'd post this FYI.
There are also some articles out there about Netflix struggling to meet demands, server wise. But since it runs fine on my phone and iPad, I don't believe that's related.

Dec 3, 2013 7:27 PM in response to Theriusby jimpal,Now this is amazing! It's 9:00 pm here in Minneapolis (right in prime viewing time) and I am getting 5800 kbps on Example Short 23.976 on my ATV 3. I have done nothing special, but just tried it on a whim, since pretty much giving up on it for the past week and complaining on this thread.
Only one data point, I know, but someone seems to have changed something. Of course, it is snowing and getting cold. Could that be it?

Yes call them and email them - but rational posts here (not rants) will also help. Apple may not respond but they do monitor these forums. Active threads with useful information will get their attention - maybe more than calls to first level support people.

Dec 3, 2013 9:57 PM in response to DustyStormby swoopersf,Ditto ... still experiencing same issues. Wired connection to router. Netflix fuzzy SD on ATV after update. *****.

When? We've provided some very consistent and useful information and we're up to 22 pages of discussion. At what point does apple actually decide to do something? when this hits 25 pages? 30?
Come on Apple (and netflix)! It's obvious there's an issue here. I'm probably going to cancel netflix - or get a roku or both. Apple - you already got my money for the apple tv, but based on my experience with this and other products of yours over the past couple years, my loyalty has taken a major hit.

"just tried it" for how long? I can get 5800 for a few minutes at a time too then it goes bad.

Dec 4, 2013 4:46 AM in response to DustyStormby re-fresh,Once again. Yes Apple / Netflix this is broken, and needs to be fixed.

Dec 4, 2013 5:32 AM in response to DustyStormby Bootwig,I'm also having quite a few issues. I have xfinity in the Western suburbs of Chicago and have 20 down and 5 up. Netflix works great on PS3 but like garbage on Apple TV. I hope they fix this quick.

Dec 4, 2013 6:31 AM in response to DustyStormby LancerEQ,Bump, having the exact same issue. Even able to stream HD from iPad to Apple TV using the Netflix app, but cannot view HD in native Apple TV Netflix app.
