Dec 16, 2013 3:45 PM in response to DustyStormby Zathrak,1) iPad airplay streaming only works if you're on iOS7. Being that iOS 7 looks like the easter bunny threw up all over it, so we don't use it here and thusly can't test it that way.
2) It mostly worked on Mavericks with Firefox via Airplay. Chrome isn't supported. Safari didn't allow HD playback for some reason. Firefox did allow HD. My only gripe is that even when the display with full screen and the player maximized, there will still playbars on the left and right sides of the show (due to non-HD?).
3) The highly generic Apple feedback wasn't helpful in any way. In addition, I would put my next month's worth of paychecks on the fact that Apple definately already knows about this issue.
Hope this helps!

Dec 16, 2013 4:32 PM in response to Zathrakby creachcollin12,update to iOS 7. apple wouldn't take your first point seriously if you weren't using the latest software.
For me the issue persists unless I'm AirPlay streaming from the netflix app via my
iPhone 5. It yields the 265 kbps stream if I do the same from my iPad air.

Dec 16, 2013 4:37 PM in response to creachcollin12by Zathrak,Well, iOS7 in it's current state is garbage, so no...and that is simply the workaround to the actualy ssue that should be fixed with the next ATV update (assumedly). :-)

Dec 17, 2013 2:54 AM in response to actionmsuby dvanhou,The faster the story spreads, the harder they will work to resolve the problem. Beyond contacting Netflix, Apple and all of your friends, some have contacted other media and it gave me the idea to contact Peter Csathy of the Huffington Post.
Keep you fingers crossed, he responded by email expressing an interest and I've emailed him back with a synopsis of what's transpired and directed him to this discussion and the YouTube video.
His BIO - Peter is CEO of Manatt Digital Media Ventures, a media and technology venture capital and business consulting firm. A 25-year digital media veteran, Csathy served his first decade in executive roles in both major and indie studios (Universal Studios, New Line Cinema, Savoy Pictures) and his second decade in digital media/technology companies (video enabler Sorenson Media and video social networking company SightSpeed -- acquired by Logitech, as well as online music pioneer Musicmatch -- acquired by Yahoo!). Csathy is a prolific blogger on media/digital media/technology issues on Huffington Post, TechCrunch, Fast Company and on his own "Digital Media Update" blog. Csathy received his J.D. from the Harvard Law School, and his B.A., summa *** laude, in political science from the University of Minnesota.
He's a self-proclaimed MN diehard and I know a lot of the Posters are from this area, including me. He knows what TV means to us in the subzero temps!
Have a great day!

So people should know iOS7 is fine and someones opinion has nothing to do with this.

Dec 17, 2013 5:30 AM in response to GaryJR4by Zathrak,Yes, in case anyone had problems understanding, iOS 7 being garbage is my opinion, much like it being fine is Gary's. My opinion on iOS 7 was provided because it was relevant to the topic and troubleshooting (not being able to AirPlay via iPad) which some people may have not known about. Arguing the pros and cons of iOS 7 is irrelavant. Please stay on the topic.

Dec 17, 2013 5:36 AM in response to Zathrakby met_fan,Ha...this thread has nothing to do with iOS 7, you come in and call it garbage three posts in a row, and you're telling others to stay on topic.

Dec 17, 2013 10:25 AM in response to Zathrakby rgoldd2,Ok Zathrak but posting here isn't going to get you anywhere as Apple doesn't read these forums so the feedback site at least reaffirms they are aware of the issue. No one ever said AirPlay from iPad or iPhone was the be-all end solution it was just an option in the interim that's all you if you can't accept that you need iOS 7 for Netflix AirPlay don't complain to us when need to find another solution for you.
-
Dec 17, 2013 10:50 AM in response to rgoldd2by Zathrak,I guess you didn't read my post or fully understand this. I didn't come here and post this asking for a solution. I posted it to provide others with the steps I've taken and what I've found out so far. Also, if you had read my follow up, I stated very clearly and in great detail that my work around is by airplaying it via OS X...so I'm not complaining as you have tried to suggest. Stop turning this is to a negative forum thread and get back to the point. If my contributions to this issue aren't of any importance to you, that's fine but don't be a forum troll. I'd like to think that others may find some of that information useful.
Once again and hopefully for the last time, iOS 7 was initially mentioned (depsite my dislike of it) because it is needed to try troubleshooting Netflix via iPad and comparing that video quality vs Apple TV. It really doesn't get much more relavent than that.

Dec 17, 2013 11:01 AM in response to DustyStormby MBPguy07,I just got a new Apple TV this weekend, and I'm having the same problem: Netflix channel quality *****, and all other channels produce a sharp HD picture. Surprised Apple/Netflix haven't publicly responded to this obvious problem.

Dec 17, 2013 11:17 AM in response to MBPguy07by ericfromin,FROM MY INDICATIONS ARE THAT APPLE IS AWARE & WORKING ON IT.NETFLIX TOLD ME THAT THEY ALSO WORKING ON THIS ISSUE. THIS ALL CAME ABOUT WHEN NETFLIX MADE CHANGES & NOW OFFERING SUPER HD ON MOST TITLES NOW. WE ALL THOUGHT AT FIRST IT WAS THE APPLE TV UPGRADE BUT SEEMS THATS NOT THE CASE. I THINK NETFLIX WAS COUNTING ON COMCAST & OTHERS TO GOIN OPEN CONNECT, COMCAST IS NOT GOING TO BY ALL INDICATIONS. THAT MEANS SOMETHING ELSE WILL HAVE TO BE DONE. ALOT OF PEOPLE THAT STREAM NETFLIX EITHER STREAM AT A LOWER QUALITY SETTING OR JUST DONT KNOW THE DIFFERENCE. STREAMING DURING OFF PEAK TIMES IS NOT A PROBLEM JUST AT LATE AFTER NOON & EVENINGS DOES THIS PROBLEM OCCUR. SEEMS THAT HAS ALWAYS BEEN AN ISSUE WITH NETFLIX , FOR ME & MANY MORE WHO HAS COMCAST AS A ISP.

Dec 17, 2013 11:54 AM in response to ericfrominby jimpal, ericfroman, you have just provided the best overall summary of the situation that has been posted on this forum. While some have tried to focus on just Apple, or the Apple TV app, the situation is much more complicated as you have described.
It all started with Netflix's Super HD rollout which assumed the large ISP's (such as Comcast) would readily embrace their Open Connect strategy. When Comcast, et al, balked, the whole house of cards fell. Internet overload, exacerbated by Super HD, led to inferior streams which the Netflix Apple TV app, and some others, were never designed for. This helps explain why some areas, such as Minneapolis, seem to have been more affected by the problem than others.
No wonder this is taking so long to resolve. I'm sure it is taking significant effort by Netflix to get their distribution under control, probably revision of the Netflix ATV app, and possibly ATV software revision by Apple to mesh with the necessarily revised Netflix app, to get us all back to where we were happily a month or so ago.
How crappy that Netflix failed to acknowledge their responsibility for so long. Just think of all the modems and routers cycled off and on, reversed HDMI cables, etc., they caused.
ericfroman, congratulations for putting it all together so well. Just about all of these factors have been said one place or another on this forum, and rebutted in some cases, but your summary has it right.

Super HD was opened to all Sept 26th.
The Netflix Apple TV issue started around 11 November.
My Chromecast (Airplay and Rokus) all continue to get Super HD on Comcast.
There is a Netflix Apple TV issue that started 11 November - and there are certainly other issues as well - but let's not mix them please
