Q: Could not sign in to iMessage.

A few days ago my iMessage worked fine.  As of today, I have been having problems with iMessage. I get the following error message: "Could not sign in to iMessage. Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again."

First of all, I have internet connectivity. I am able to browse the web just fine; therefore, I do not have network problems. My iTunes password also works just fine, no issues with that at all.   I've shutdown the computer and again nothing.

Any ideas of what might the problem? Thanks.

What kind of connection are you using? Some people have had problems signing into apps (like the app store) because they're on WIFI connections and don't have an Ethernet configuration in their Network settings. Adding a an Ethernet configuration (By clicking the + button and chooseing Ethernet from the dropdown), even if it's not plugged in or being used at all, has been known to correct this issue.

Hi Maggy, I am using WiFi (Time Capsule - 5th generation) connection. I've done what you've indicated and it did not solve the problem.  I keep getting the same error message.

Hello Davis, it did not work. I am about to give up on this. I really hate the fact that I cannot connect to iMessage on my iMac, I love the feature, more so when my phone is on the other side of the room, the ease of replying quick and fast is awesome. Especially when at least 70% of my friends and family have an iPhone/iMessage.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

    View Show Log List

    from the menu bar.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Uncheck the box marked Keychain in the iCloud preference pane, then check it again. Important: You must have at least one another device already synced to the same keychain. A message will appear on the other device telling you how to re-enable the iCloud keychain on the Mac.

Lucky you Godrive, I on the other hand do not have luck at all:

I go to iCloud preference pane.

I click Keychain box to unmark.  But then, I get the following message: "Do you want to keep a copy of your Safari passwords and credit cards on this Mac?"  I am given 3 choices, "Delete from Mac," "Cancel" and "Keep on this Mac".

I then choose "Delete from Mac" and the Keychain box is checked again automatically.  I do the same thing all over again but this time I click on "Keep on this Mac" and once more the Keychain box is checked again automatically.  I do not get a chance to uncheck the box and check it again,  it does so automatically.  Then I tried to log back in to iMessage and get the same error......"Could not sign in to iMessage......"

If I press on "cancel," well the operation is cancelled.

In conclusion, I do not even get a message on my other device telling me how to re-enable the iCloud keychain.

    Am I doing something wrong??????

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.

    First, empty the Trash.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:

    find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 -o -acl \) 2> /dev/null | wc -l

Launch the Terminal application in the same way you launched Console.

Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.

The output of this command, on a line directly below what you entered, will be a number such as "41." Please post it in a reply.

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.

This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.

    Step 1

If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.

Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):

    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null

This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.

The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.

    Step 2 (optional)

Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.

Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select

    Utilities Terminal

from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.

In the Terminal window, type this:

    res

Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:

    resetpassword

Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.

Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.

Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.

Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.

    Select

    Restart

    from the menu bar.

I'll do this and let you know what happens.

I have all my data on my Time Capsule, CrashPlan and will back up all my data on another external hardrive just in case.
