Nov 23, 2013 5:07 PM in response to Linc Davisby Frank from Los Angeles,Linc Davis,
Step 1 did not work. I did as instructed, quit Terminal and restarted my computer. Then went back to sign in to iMessage and got the same error message.
I did Step 2, and had to quit since I did not get an option to select Utilities > Terminal. Did get other 4 options but the one you indicated did not show on the screen.

ApplicationsPlease read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

Jan 6, 2014 12:55 PM in response to Dannygackby kayewilkins,IF the Imessage software nad your apple id work fine in another user account then the issue is with your user account.
Guest user can sometime give you a false nagative so i would recommned you acutally create a test account on your comptuer and try in there.
also try safe mode < If your user works fine in safe mode then the issue with some thridparty software installed. if it doesnt and its your user only still folow the below.
If its all users on the computer and safemode it maybe the network blocking the ports and it maybe worth testing on another network
its its turly just your user account thats the problem the following should fix it.
the suffix ~/library/ refere to your user library located >
finder > click go > while your looking at the drop down hold options and go into library.
Also one quick question has your comptuer recentally gone in for a repair? if its was a MLB the device may not have been serialized correctly and will cause issue with siging into Imessage and facetime. the best way to check is to go >
apple > about this mac > and where is say version 10.7/8/9.x click that twice and if you see your serial then you good if no serial show thast bad and means yu should get the cotpuer reslerized at the local apple store.
~/library/Preference/
Removed the com.apple.ichat.plist > you may see a bunch of ichat.jabber and other > take all ichat files and drag them to the desktop.
~/library/Preference/byhost/
remove allt eh com.apple.ichat.xxx.plist files in here as well > move tot eh desktop.
~/library/caches/ Deleted everything
~/library/savedapplciationstate/ deleted everything
~/library/contianers/com.apple.ichat > take this folde rnad move it to the desktop
~/library/Cookies/ Delete everything
System Preference> user and groups > Login items > if there is anything in here i would temparily remove them as they maybe effecting your ability to sign in if one of those applcaitons is blocking or not working correct
It maybe worth looking into
~/library/Launchagents/
if there is anything in here is could potentially be casuing issues , removed tot eh desktop as well
Restart the comtpeur after you remove all the folder and try signing back into imessage
If thast doesnt do it i would recommned that you call apple care cause they may need to rename the preference or even the library folder which is a major OS and user changed and you probably dont want to do thast own your own

Jan 7, 2014 6:21 AM in response to kayewilkinsby Dannygack, thank you for your post, i'm going to try that, i found something interesting though. the first thing i tried after this was going into safe mode and trying opening imessage but it would keep crashing with the error " an internal messages error occured" so i couldn't even open imessages untill i booted up in regular mode.

Perfect - step 2 (optional) process worked for me after booting from the recovery volume and checking the ACL's & file permissions. Step 1, as with Frank from Los Angeles, did not work.
Appreciate the great advice - I will add it to my list of Administrative Mac resource documentation.
