Time Machine can't access the backup disk 'Backups' OSStatus error 2

I've tried loging in as a different admin user, but I get the same error. I've removed and recreated the backup in the Server software to no avail.

You need to enable sharing in the Get Info panel of the networked backup disk. I had the same problem and that fixed it for me.

I was getting this same error on a XServe running 10.7.5 server.

I was able to connect to the Backups volume using Time Machine if I authenticated as the admin user that I had used to configure it but other local or LDAP user credentials would result in the OSStatus error 2 message.

I was using an NFS mount to store the TM backups. I created a sparse image which I had mounted to use for the backups. Enabling sharing did not help.

However I did eventually discover a fix for my particular problem.

Once I logged into the server once using the local or LDAP user credentials (You don't have to be logged in all the time, just log in once), then I could use these credentials in Time Machine to connect to the TM Service on the server.

Thought I would post my fix here to help others who might get this error in the future.

I have a G-Safe connected via FireWire 800 to my new Mac Mini. I started receiving this error after having Time Machine working successfully. I went into Disk Utility and unmounted (not eject) the G-Safe and then remount it. Then I reconnected my other Mac (mid 2014 MBP) to TM and it worked. I still have yet to figure out why I was getting the error. Perhaps it was because I had the disk mounted as me already and I think TM runs as root and was mounting it twice and running into an issue. Perhaps because I log off the server but leave it running the FireWire drive disconnects. There could be any number of reasons. I plan to talk to AppleCare and see if I can find out why this happened. My guess is that with my particular setup a timeout occurred somewhere either on the server or client side with the persistent connections and TM barfed.

Side note: On my Mac Mini I noticed that SMB works better than AFP and this is how I connect to TM. TM was working fine for weeks and then suddenly wasn't. Go figure.

Had similar issue, using a WD MyCloud NAS Drive. Got new drive installed from Mac Store and then started to Migrate all the files over from the Time Machine Backup. It would see the WDMyCloud drive, connect ok, and then just stop processing. Then checking the volume with Finder, it returned the backup volume was not there. Got Time Machine can't access the backup disk 'Backups' OSStatus error 2 when trying to select the WDMyCloud drive from the TM settings menu.

Determined the User Share Access permission was set to "No Access" for the User I was login into with. Be certain the permissions are set to "Full Access" for the TimeMachineBackup share access settings under the WD NAS User menu. Once corrected to "full access" the entire 1.1 TB backup volume was visible.
