I'm trying to arrange a set of photos in icon view in ascending order, with the 1st date and time taken at the beginning, and the last at the end. When I hit Clean up by Date Modified, or Arrange by Date Modified, it will only do it with the latest at the beginning and the oldest at the end. How can I reverse the order?

If you mean in iPhoto, both Date and Ascending should be checked..?
If you mean in Finder, try Date Created.
If you mean on the Desktop, Date Created should also work, but other desktop icons will also enter the mix.
Thanks, but I still can't do it. I am in a folder in Preview. I have tried every combination of Arrange by .. and Clean up by ....
Here's a screen shot of the folder, and I want to reverse the order in which the files appear, staying in Icon view.

That looks like Finder, not Preview. Note the sidebar at the left.
Oops, Sorry - I meant finder. But it doesn't alter the fact that I still need an answer if possible. Thanks.

No I never got a replay that helped. Further googling and otherwise searching on the subject has led me to believe that it can't be done, except by importing the photos into iPhoto and then re-ordering them. Ridiculous! Perhaps next time I'm near an Apple Store I'll ask a "genius".
