JAVA is not working

I can't figure out how to get the JAVA plug-in to work at my mac. I got 10.6.8 Snow Leopard and have no software updates available. Why won't it work?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Have you tried to download the latest version from Oracle's website? You need to have it installed on your machine before you can update it via Software Update.

If you think you already have Java installed, then you can download and install its latest revision from here.

This will open a security hole in your Operating System.
