I don't want to purchase. how can i update the iphoto so that it runs on this new OS X?

what version of iPhoto do you have? If you have iPhoto '11 there is a free update to version 9.5 for Maverick - if you have an earlier version then you must purchase an upgrade to iPhoto '11
