How to get playback speed options for an audiobook that I ripped and imported into iTunes?

I like the option of varying playback speed from normal to 1.5 x normal on my iPad and iPhone. That works fine when listening to Audible books and listening to podcasts. I would love that option when listening to books that have been ripped to the m4a format.

Years ago I would change the file extension from m4a to m4b and that would give me the option of playback speed change on my iPod. Does that option still exist? What if I had ripped to a mp3 file or converted to a mp3 file?

Are their any settings in iTunes that would give the option?

Then select Get Info. Then select the Options tab. Then select the box next to Media Kind and pick Audiobook. (Might be a good time to select Remember playback position too). Then select OK. Then after synching the iPod and iPhone you can select the playback speed. In the iPod go your music playlist to find. In the iPhone go to Audiobooks to listen...
